❤️ THE OLD TIN SHED 💚
One of the most iconic photos in our history, would have to be that of our old tin shed, constructed back in the late 1950s to serve as change rooms for players, and then as the social rooms after games.
To fund the build, an “Ugly Man’s Competition” was arranged, and raised enough money to buy timber and galvanised iron to proudly construct a 24 x 48 foot unlined “tin shed” – the first in the district with a 1000 gallon water tank that served for a couple of years for showers and other water supplies. (Our guess is as good as yours regarding what an ugly man’s competition was!)
Whilst it certainly doesn’t compare in comfort and style to the modern day facilities, at the time it was viewed as the ‘Taj Mahal’, and was certainly an upgrade to the old army tent which was erected over saw dust where the current playground sits.
Separating the opposing teams was a massive old wooden door, to which life member Peter Ashby recalls one day after a game against Upper Gully, “a bucket of water was thrown over the door” no doubt resuming hostilities that would’ve taken place on the field. At night, the door would be removed, and the tin shed would open up and form the social room, where beers were drunk, ciggies were smoked, and a good time was had by all. A canteen served food in approximately the same place where the outdoor bar stands today, ironically it was Viv Laurito often working in the canteen alongside Noreen Akers, Viv can now been seen in the bar each and every home game, still serving our members all these years on!
The tin shed served until 1979 when the current building was completed and opened, and despite pleas from the club and players at the time to maintain it as a gym, it was removed roughly 6 months later.
If you have any memories or photos of the old tin shed, drop them in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you!
