It is with great sadness that we inform of the passing of Peta Murphy.

Peta was an active member and high level squash player of the Westerfolds club for many years. She contributed significantly to our club family and we are all so saddened at the loss of a great lady.

Our thoughts are with Peta’s family and friends at this sad time.

The Squash community is saddened to hear of the passing earlier today of Peta Murphy MP Federal Member for Dunkley

Peta was a passionate supporter of Squash, born from a lifelong involvement in the sport.

Peta represented NSW, ACT and Victoria at junior and senior levels, and went on to win gold medals at the Australian Masters, US Masters and World Masters Games.

Off the court she held a range of important roles including President of Squash & Racquetball Victoria, Vice President of Squash Australia and she was a member of the World Squash Federation Governance and Audit Committee.

Most recently, Peta joined us at the WSF World Junior Championships where she met with players and officials including WSF President Zena Wooldridge OBE and Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue.

The thoughts of the Squash community are with Peta's family and friends at this sad time.

Westerfolds will be closed on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7th of November.

The squash courts are available to members who have an access code, as per the usual membership arrangement.

👀 What do we have here?

📸 🇵🇰 Westerfolds Junior Rameen was at the 2023 WSF World Squash Junior Championship today at MSAC, cheering on her Pakistani squash hero Hamza Khan in the finals. Rameen was lucky enough to get an autograph and photo with him after he won the championship!

🧹 Westerfolds Squash Manager Kristin and club member Maria Kalafatis were also at the event, volunteering throughout the week. They were hard at work cleaning the glass court in between games (and also spectating with a pretty good view of the back left corner!).

🌏 If you’d like to see some world class junior squash, head on down to MSAC this week for the women’s team event. It begins on Monday with the finals being held on Saturday. More info can be found here or on the World Squash Federation (WSF) and Squash Australia pages:

• 2023 VICTORIAN OPEN RESULTS •
• REX & WESTERFOLDS VICTORIOUS •

🏆 Last weekend the 2023 Victorian Open was held at Mulgrave Country Club.

🔥 This was Rex’s final tournament before retiring from professional squash and starting a career with Fire Rescue Victoria.

🤩 Rex was up against the 2022 World Junior Champion, Rowan Damming from the Netherlands. It was an intense, entertaining 70min 5-game thriller where both players put on a show of their skill, speed and tenacity. The match was a nail-biter going right down to the wire, finishing 11-9 in the fifth.

🏆 10-12, 11-9, 8-11, 11-1, 11-9 (70min)

🏡 It couldn’t be more fitting that Rex’s last win was his hometown tournament before hanging up his racquet. It also rounded out his PSA titles to his 20th title from 36 finals over an amazing 15 year career.

🥹 We are immensley proud of Rex and his achievements and we wish him all the best.

🥇🥇 We are also incredibly proud of three of our juniors, Heshan Piyatissa, Sid Ramani, and Chelsea Paule, who competed in the event. Heshan and Sid won divisions 3 & 4, respectively, and we couldn’t be happier for them! Their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off. Well done also to all of senior players who competed.

🫶 Special shout out to our coaches Chris Morgan and Rhys Gevaux who gave wonderful coaching support in between games to all of our players, especially to our juniors. We believe it contributed to their victories!

💙 Lastly, a big thanks to the Westerfolds supporters who went to watch and that cheered loudly for all of our players. The other clubs certainly noticed how loud we were!

🗓️ The next Victorian tournament on the calendar is our very own 2023 Westerfolds Open on 15-17th September. Save the date!

• 2023 VICTORIAN OPEN DAY 4 •

🔥🔥🔥 Rex had a solid 3-0 win today defeating Temwa Chileshe in the Semi-Finals (11-8, 11-5, 11-8).

🏆 Rex will play in the Final tomorrow at 3:15pm against Dutchman Rowan Damming. It could be a tough match as Rowan was the 2022 World Junior Champion, but we all know that Rex has a wealth of experience… and incredible talent and tenacity!

📺 The final will be live streamed on Squash and Racquetball Victoria’s page.

🤩 Heshan Piyatissa and Sid Ramani also had success today winning their matches in Divisions 3 and 4 respectively. They will play tomorrow morning in their Semi-Finals for a spot in the Finals later in the day.

• 2023 VICTORIAN OPEN DAY 3 •

🔥🔥 Well done to Rex who had another 3-1 result (11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 11-3) defeating Rhys Dowling in the Quarter-Finals.

Rex’s next match is in the Semi-Final against fourth seed Temwa Chileshe from New Zealand at 3:15pm on Saturday. Good luck, Rex!! We’re hoping that baby Ollie isn’t keeping you from getting enough sleep this weekend!

We also have a number of Westerfolds players, including 3 of our juniors, competing in the graded draws over Saturday and Sunday.
