A GOLD COIN CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! 💜

From 19th October – 1st November, GKR Karate is proudly supporting RizeUp Australia, helping women and children impacted by domestic and family violence rebuild their lives.
We invite all our GKR Karate students and families to come together, wear your purple belt and bring a gold coin donation to class.

A small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference to another family's fresh start.

Let's come together as a karate community and show the power of kindness, generosity and support.

Every contribution counts! 💜

Between finding shoes, collecting drink bottles and getting everyone out the door, it’s easy to walk past these frames in our Lower Templestowe waiting room.

They’re our Dojo Kun: five principles our students practise on the mats and carry into everyday life. Character, perseverance, respect, self-control and sincerity.

Have you spotted a little Dojo Kun moment at home lately? We’d love to hear it.

1. Pursue the highest standards of personal character

2. Cultivate a spirit of effort and perseverance

3. Exercise courtesy and respect towards others

4. Refrain from reckless or violent behaviour

5. Be faithful and sincere in everything you do

Throughout October, we’re inviting our students to wear a purple belt to help GKR Karate take a stand against domestic and family violence.

For the third year, GKR Karate is supporting RizeUp, an organisation that provides practical assistance to families affected by domestic and family violence.

You can show your support by ordering a special Purple Belt, a Purple Budo Bear, or both. A limited number are available, and all profits from their sale will be donated to RizeUp.

Order yours here:
https://gkrkarateshop.com.au/product/sdfvcampaign/

Already have a purple belt? Wear it proudly throughout October and, if you’re able, consider making a donation directly to RizeUp:

Every belt worn and every donation helps raise awareness and support this important cause.

Karate has a funny habit of becoming a family affair.

The Sherwin family are familiar faces around our Lower Templestowe dojo, with three of them now helping teach classes.

That’s a pretty impressive number of Senseis around one dinner table!

We’re very lucky to have the Sherwin family as part of our Lower Templestowe karate family.

Have you trained with one of the Sherwins? Give them a shout-out below! 🥋

A great night on the mats at our Lower Templestowe dojo, with kids, teens and adults training side by side, from beginners through to our more experienced belts.

Everyone works at their own level, learns at their own pace and helps each other along the way.

If you’ve ever driven past and wondered what goes on behind those windows, maybe it’s time to come in and give karate a go! 🥋

Yvonne started karate with her son to give him the confidence she missed as a child. 21 years later and in the midst of cancer treatment, the thought of returning to karate keeps her on track.

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer
