GROUND NAME CHANGE FOR LEGENDS DAY
In continuing the spirit of celebrating our 80 season history on legends day, Western Suburbs Cricket Club is very happy to announce that the mighty Coronation Oval will once again be re-branded (unofficially) to Colin Goward Oval for the day.
All who knew Colin through his various roles in the club as a player, coach, committee member, curator and ultimately life member will get a chance to toast to his lifetime of commitment to this club - and his countless hours of contribution at our home ground.
As a player, Colin was a constant figure in our 1st Grade squad through the 1970s - making close to 100 appearances over a 13 year period. Colin was an integral part of the 1976-77 premiership winning 1st Grade team - playing in 12 of the 14 fixtures that season alongside some of the great names of our club. This season is the 50th anniversary of the 1976-77 1st Grade premiership season - and throughout the course of the season this team will be spoken of in the highest regards on many occasions.
The extended Goward family has been a constant at Western Suburbs since the club's formation, stretching back to the famous "meeting under the lightpost" in 1947 at Telarah. The lineage continued through his son Christopher, who went on to also compile an impressive 1st Grade career as a wicket-keeper batsman. His wife Karen, a former club secretary, also remains actively involved with the club to this day.
We look forward to welcoming the Goward family, and all of Colin's past colleagues and friends to COLIN GOWARD OVAL on Saturday October 3.
** Please note, we're not changing anything at the ground or doing anything to disrespect the name of Coronation Oval - it is still our home and we're proud of it. We'd just like to do something nice for our late friend and his family that gave so much to this club and this community.
