We are now accepting nominations for this year's Taroona Tennis Club Championships.

Please email your registrations to [email protected] or add your name to the registration sheets in the Clubhouse.
Registrations will close on Wednesday 11th March at 10.00pm.

Please note that all courts at Taroona have been allocated to the Championship weekend. Any existing recurring bookings have been cancelled and no court bookings will be possible during this period.

The Championships are open to all Club Members independent of skill level and there is a strong emphasis on the enjoyment of participation, win or lose! Playing in the Championships is free, there will be no entry fee. You can register for as many events as you wish.

Championship events are as follows:
Mixed Doubles
Men's Doubles
Women's Doubles
Women's Singles
Men's Singles

Junior events (16 years and under) will also be scheduled if there are sufficient junior player entries. Juniors must also be Club members to play in the Championships.

For all doubles registrations please nominate both players in the partnership.

All matches will be played as two full sets with a 7 point tie-break to be played at 6 games all in each of these sets, if required. If the result is one set all, the match winner will be decided by a subsequent 10 point tie-break in place of a third set.

Matches will take place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March. We require players to be available to play at the times allocated in the draw across the weekend.
If there are too many entries to accommodate all matches on Saturday and Sunday, some overflow matches will be played on Friday night, 20th March, subject to player availability.
Once all entries are received the draw will be prepared and distributed to players several days before the competition.

The registration sheets in the clubhouse will be updated with all registered players for general interest and to encourage players to register.

We look forward to receiving your registrations.
Even if you can't participate in the Championships, please come along throughout the weekend and join in the fun as a spectator.

Kind regards,
Taroona Tennis Committee

Incident Reports - a reminder that the Club has an Incident Report book in the clubhouse. The book is kept in the first aid cupboard below the trophy cabinet. If any player receives a significant injury during play or while moving around the immediate Club surrounds, please record this in our Incident Report book so that any hazards can be identified. Furthermore, this is essential in complying with our insurance requirements should significant medical intervention be required.

Grants Update

Tasmanian Active Infrastructure
The Club was advised in December 2025 that we were unsuccessful in our application to the Tasmanian Active Infrastructure Grants program for the replacement of the fencing around the tennis courts. The committee is seeking feedback and from the grants agency for suggestions on how to improve our application. It is expected there will be another call for applications in the future. The committee is also considering strategies for a self-funded, multi-year, staged approach to the re-fencing of the courts.

Bell Bay Aluminium
A small Community Grant application was submitted to Bell Bay Aluminium for the replacement of our clubhouse chairs. We were unsuccessful in this application. The Committee will consider funding the replacement ourselves.

Ball Machine Update

Our Club ball machine has now seen some regular use by Club members who have been instructed in the safe use of the machine. If you would like to be inducted in how to use the ball machine, please send an email to the club email or contact Simon (number on the noticeboard in the clubrooms) and we will arrange further instruction sessions.

The cost for using the machine is $10 for the first hour and $5 per half hour thereafter. Payment will cover the cost for the regular replacement of balls. Cash payment can be made in the honesty box by the front door (please include a note with your name) or alternately via direct deposit to the Club's bank account. Details available on request.

Hi Club Members,
Our annual Christmas handicapped mixed doubles and BBQ will be held on the afternoon of Saturday 13th December. The social games will commence at 12.30pm (please arrive at 12.00pm) and conclude around 4.30pm with Christmas BBQ and drinks commencing at the end of play.

Competition Entry
This year we are seeking 32 Club member players in total, 16 men and 16 women for the afternoon of mixed doubles. Entries can be registered either by placing your name on the whiteboard behind the Clubhouse front door or emailing your name to the club (see the email). Entries for the games will close at 6pm on Sunday 7th December. Player numbers will be capped at 16 each for men and women so it will be a case of first in with your name registered to secure a spot.

Mixed Doubles Format
The social games are meant to be a low-stress fun afternoon for players. There will be four groups of 8 mixed players. You will be assigned a partner and allocated to one of these groups based on your handicap which will be assigned by the committee. This is aimed to make each match as close as possible. You will play a round robin of three matches within the group with the same partner for the afternoon. Your group will be allocated one of the four courts. You will only play 3 of the 6 matches within your group so there will be time to relax and socialise. Each match will follow the 31 point game format with winners being the first pair to reach 31. The game format rules are included below. They may look complicated but there will be a briefing and there are plenty of members who are familiar with the format.

Entry Fee and BBQ
A $5.00 cash entry fee is requested from players to help cover costs. This will be paid to our games organiser as you arrive. Please seek out the organiser at the desk in the Clubhouse so we know you have arrived and are ready to play.

Snacks will be provided through the afternoon for players. The BBQ is included in your entry fee but for catering purposes please let us know if you will be staying to eat. Any other members or guests are welcome to join in the BBQ but are requested to also pay $5.00 and let us know in advance that you will be attending.

As per Club policy, the BBQ event will be BYO alcohol. We have four fridges in the Clubhouse and will have iced eskys available for members to store their supplies.

In the event that the weather is forecast to be a washout, we will advise of cancellation on Saturday morning 13th December.

We are looking forward to seeing you there.

HANDICAPPED GAMES FORMAT

Basic guidelines (but don't worry if its your first time, we will guide you through it on the day).

Individual player handicaps are determined and assigned by tournament organisers – general rule of thumb for every 0.5 difference between gradings, 5 points are assigned (i.e. partnership 1 = 15.5 points vs partnership 2 = 16.5 points, which means 15.5 start on -5 and 16.5 start on 5 = 10 point handicap).

Players giving away points serve first (i.e. starting on -5 in the above example will serve), the other team will choose ends.

5 serves per player. One end of the court always starts service from the forehand side, other end of the court always starts service from the backhand side, this is generally set by tournament organisers on the day.

Change ends on odd numbers. For example when points total: 5, 15, 25 etc.

First to 31 points wins the game.

If players are on 30 points all, sudden death point to win.
(For our typical Taroona Club players, handicaps usually range between 5 and 9. The lower the number the better the player.)

The new path to court 4 has been completed, giving amazing accessibility to it.

Matt Sherlock, James Heyward and Simon Lawrence spent a huge amount of time on this project, ably assisted by Mark Painter, Mark Underwood, Wayne Nikolajew, and Stef Stimson

Thank you to all these club members involved. 👏

Here is a “fly through” so you can see the finished path ahead of getting to the club in person.
