Hello to Members, Families, Supporters & Friends,
On Saturday, Tarnagulla turned on a beautiful day and, contrary to weather forecasts, not a drop of rain was to be seen. The sun shone across the immaculately manicured lush fairways and sand scrapes. It is such a pleasure to play golf on!
The clubhouse was abuzz as two champions were to be crowned in the eighteen-hole event, as well as the social nine-hole competition. The championship players teed off keenly at 9.00am, whilst the social players scampered out at a more leisurely 10:30am. This ensured that the serious golfers, and the less than serious social players, could finish their rounds at a similar time to enjoy the lovely food on offer at the clubhouse.
Whilst it was the club championship, there was camaraderie and a jovial reverence between all players. Yahoos, claps and supportive jeers could be heard across the course.
After the rounds had been completed, there was a vibrant atmosphere in the club as players shared their high and lowlights from their rounds over fresh cakes. This was followed by a brilliant raffle with multiple winners. Then it was time to present the awards.
Being a volunteer run club and our championship event, awards were given to highlight the years of work by some of our key volunteers. An award was given to Peter Ravenhall for his tireless work maintaining the golf course, whether it be mowing, clearing, chopping or scraping. Peter has helped curate our gorgeous bush golf course.
Jan Sharman was given an award for her work, who apart from providing some of the best baked treats in the Shire for our golfers, has been the club’s Treasurer since 2017. She has been vital to the club’s governance and direction over the last few years.
Then, Dave Shay was given an award and advised he has been elevated to a Life Member. Dave has been involved with the club for over the last 48 years. Initially as a young child whacking golf balls as he followed his keen golfer parents, to becoming Junior Club Champ, representing the club in pennant, helping to maintain the course, providing free golf lessons to our members, head handicapper and being an absolute pillar of the club.
Whilst we highlighted the work of some of our superstar volunteers, we must acknowledge the work of our many volunteers. Your work and contributions have helped create our vibrant and thriving golf club.
As for the golf, Phil Lloyd won the Social Nines competition, followed by Liam Radich in second place.
The Nearest to the Pin was won by Jill Sharp and the Longest Drive was taken out by Gary Flewker Barker. Both showed incredible skill to take out their respective awards.
The Women’s Club Champion is Jill Sharp, whose newly acquired local knowledge of the course has seen her excel and dominate the fairways. In second was Jenny Honeyman, whose enthusiasm for golf is showing in her ever-improving results.
The Men’s Club Champion is Peter Sanderson. Despite saying he got some lucky bounces and breaks, his gross score of 72 suggests otherwise. In second place was Garry Harwood narrowly beating out Dave Shay.
Thank you to all players, contributors and club volunteers.
Our next event is the Three Club Monty on the 20th of September. We hope to see you there.
