Emerging basketball talent, Mariah Radburn, is set to wave the flag for the Taree Tornadoes in the U14 girls division of the Basketball NSW ‘D- League’
This is a feather in the cap of Mariah’s basketball development as she has been identified following performances with the Taree Tornadoes in the Waratah Junior Leagues conducted by Basketball NSW.
Selection to participate in the ‘D-League’ is a major achievement as only the top 16 players from Country NSW and the top 16 players from Metro NSW are invited and Mariah will be one of the youngest participants to weave her magic in the ‘D-League’ competition.
On top of this, Mariah has also been selected to attend the 10th Pacific School Games in Adelaide, in December this year.
The 10th Pacific School Games is one of the world’s biggest school sport events and it is anticipated that approximately 4,000 competitors aged between 10 to 19 years from at least 30 countries, including teams from all Australian States and Territories, will attend.
It is an all-inclusive event which will be conducted in various age groups and categories in the sports of Swimming, Diving, Touch Football, Softball, Football (Soccer), Primary Basketball, Golf, Netball, Hockey, Primary Track and Field, as well as Goalball for the visually impaired and Mariah will be a member of the NSW Primary School girl’s basketball team.
Tickets for a raffle with five prizes are on sale at Saxby’s Stadium in Taree to help defray the cost of Mariah’s participation in Adelaide and may be purchased at $2.00 each or $100.00 for books of fifty (50) tickets.

The Taree Tornadoes U12 girls’ basketball team competing in the 2017 Molten Waratah League State Basketball Cup started in fine form again this morning to defeat Camden Valley Wildfire 38-33 to head to the final with a 3-0 win/loss record through their pool games following two hard fought wins yesterday.
The other pool was a dog fight between three teams to decide the other finalists and with the Maitland Mustangs, Gosford City Rebels and Hills Hornets Green all finishing with two wins and a loss each, a countback was needed to the decide the matter with the nod going to Hills Hornets Green.
The final saw the Taree Tornadoes register their lowest score of the year at just 24 points while their Sydney based opponents rattled up 47 points to claim the win on the main court in the Newcastle Basketball Stadium.
You can be disappointed by this result or excited by the achievements throughout the year of this group of young girls from a small country association and as it’s always better to see the glass as half full, clearly the destination is not as important as the journey and although it would have been nice to chalk up that ‘final’ win at this level of play, the improvement in skills and confidence and the friendships made will still be in the memory bank long after the result is forgotten.
Congratulations are extended to the Taree Tornadoes U12 girls, team staff, parents and supporters as you have carried the Taree Basketball flag deeper into this level of competition than any other previous team.

The 2017 Molten Waratah League State Basketball Cup is being played across the Hunter Valley this weekend with the Maitland Federation Centre the venue for the U16 and U18 girls and boys, and U12 and U14 girls and boys going around at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium.
Competition format for the State Cup sees the top three teams from Metro Division two and the winner from each of the other State based Leagues plus one wildcard team taking part in a round robin competition of two pools of four teams.
There are no semi-finals at this event, the top two teams will progress straight through to the grand final.
Taree Basketball is represented by the Taree Tornadoes U12 girls, who had a big day today to maintain their undefeated status in competitions this year.
First up they took on the highly fancied Norths Bears Black and after 32 minutes of action packed basketball were on the right side of the score line at the final siren to run out winners 39 to 36.
The Taree Tornadoes girls then backed up that performance with another tough battle against the Wagga Wagga Blaze to record a 65-57 win.
Early tomorrow morning they play their third and final round game against the Camden Valley Wildfire and a win there will take them off to berth in the final and a very historic moment for Taree Basketball.
