Finally the mains power is back and a properly functioning internet service!

South East Queensland has been hit by extreme weather conditions beginning on Christmas Day when a ferocious storm, complete with tornado, tore through our mountain destroying all power and communication systems. Now, over a week later, we have torrential rains and flooding, with thousands of trees destroyed. We are well and our property escaped the worst, but we are as yet unable to communicate.

Bruce (on the right) and Derek are enjoying working on this beautiful Stornaway – a timber cuddy cabin now replaces the “camper” setup and various upgrades have now brought her in line with current specs. Derek built her 15 years ago in the Scruffie Marine workshop and new owner, Bruce, will be sailing her on Moreton Bay . . . once he finishes sanding and varnishing . . .

For the past year, students at Circles Alternative Education have been building a boat from a kit – and not a small one. The 20’ (6m) Secret, a gaff cutter design from Scruffie Marine, is based on traditional local fishing smacks but built from CNC-cut plywood parts.

We discover more in our January/February issue, as we hear more about this exciting project from the student boatbuilders, their teacher and the boat’s designer.
