Thanks to 'Ned Kelly' Corbin Smith our bus driver for driving this group of friends of FM107.3 and 'Sandy' to have lunch and refreshments along with a free 3 hrs of comedy/music.
Could not have spent the day any better than that.

There are around 1,500 memorials to WW1 across the country and Australia has been called a nation of small town memorials.

After WW1, Australia was a nation in mourning. It had lost over 60,000 dead and around 155,000 wounded, from a population of under 5 million.

Having to raise all their own funds, with no government help, grieving families and communities wanted to commemorate their loss. For small towns, it wasn’t cheap and it wasn’t easy to create a memorial.

A lot of the mass produced stone soldiers on the memorials were made in Italy and by Italian stone masons in Australia.

Unlike the United States of America, the bodies of Australia’s war dead were not returned home during WW1.

So, Australia’s war memorials held a special significance, as they often represented surrogate graves for soldiers whose bodies were buried in overseas war cemeteries or could not be located.

I took the photograph at the war memorial in Portland, Victoria, some years ago. The War Memorial was originally unveiled on the 6th of July 1930.
