“There was none of this in my day.”
“They just need firmer boundaries.”
“You’re making excuses for them.”
If the grandparents don’t understand your child’s diagnosis, it can be one of the loneliest parts of the whole journey.
You’re advocating for your child and simultaneously managing your own parents’ doubt at the same time, and it wears you down.
Here’s the thing to hold onto: you don’t have to win the entire argument in one go. Small and steady works far better than a lecture.
Try:
🌿 “Their brain is wired differently, and this is what actually helps them.”
🌿 “I know it looks different to how we were raised. This is what we’re doing, and I’d love you on the team.”
You’re not asking them to become an expert overnight.
You’re asking them to trust you, and to be gentle with a grandchild who is already trying their absolute best.
Save this, or send it to someone who needs the words. 💛
