Penshurst Martial Arts offers structured Karate & Kobudo classes for all abilities, no experience necessary, only a willingness to lean in a positive, fun, safe, mentor style environment. Welcome to Penshurst Martial Arts (Naraasun Dojo) where we offer structured Karate and Kobudo classes for all ages and abilities, no experience necessary, only a willingness to learn in a positive, fun, safe, men

tor style environment. It uses effective natural forms in its ex*****on i.e. nothing your body wasn't designed to do; Efficient movement or as we say, minimum action for maximum gain, adaptable for all body types and strength profiles. Basically if it’s overcomplicated you won’t remember it when you need it. At our core is the battle of mind, body and spirit (Sanshin) and a hard soft philosophy. There are many benefits to studying traditional Okinawan kobudo alongside karate training. Kobudo teaches weapon techniques using implements originally based on farming and fishing tools, such as the Bo staff(Roku Shaku Bo), Sai, Nunchaku, Tonfa, Tinaka, K**a, Ieku(Eku), and Nunti Bo. Practicing with these weapons helps develop coordination, timing, power, and an understanding of weapons applications that reinforces and enhances empty-hand karate skills. The weapons become extensions of the body that improve muscle memory, reflexes, and the ability to generate maximal force and speed. Kobudo and karate also share foundational principles like proper stances, breath control, and whole-body unity of motion. (Classes for High school age students and up)

What is a Nunchaku ヌンチャク from the "You want to learn Kobudo Series"
Traditionally they are flailing weapon linking two heavy wooden sticks together. Their composition can vary from material used, rope, chain connecting even roller bearings etc and rough sizing should be the palm to elbow. We train using octagonal hardwood nunchaku with a rope connector so it can be practically applied. As a single or dual wielding weapon. Flail means one end is fixed while the other swings

What is a BO from the "You want to learn Kobudo Series"
It all starts with the BO, this comes in all shapes and sizes in our case we use the Roku shaku bō which is 6feet or in Australia 182cm and generally its comes in three styles, too pick Thick in the middle thin at the end, round and my favourite octagonal. We train with real hardwood Bo not plastic or other through extensive two person drills.

Why learn weapons if you can't carry them in the street from the "You want to learn Kobudo Series"
By learning and understanding each weapons fundamentals, we also learn how these fundamental can be applied building essential physical and mental skills allowing self-Defense with Everyday Objects much like they were adapted Historically. ie what ever is at hand (pen, umbrella etc) for both attack and defence of other weapons.
All that said, the base truth is this, this is not the weapon, you are the weapon and this is an extension of self.
