Hockey is a sport for life and we love seeing stories like this: https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1569962025132956&id=100063575201061&mibextid=wwXIfr&rdid=uA6RsSDzl7NhsREc #
In a historic milestone, recently Greg Kay and Geoff Hayes celebrated their 50th year of playing hockey together.
From Juniors (Under 10’s) for Kahibah Tigers in Newcastle (coached by Greg’s father Warren who founded the club in 1970), to NSW Schools Champions for Warners Bay High (twice in 3 years), to Seniors (including Indoor) and Masters in Sydney, Greg and Geoff have been able to celebrate enormous success in hockey together, with both now appearing in over 1500 hockey games each during their careers.
Also Geoff’s twin brother Chris (who remained in Newcastle), was a key member of the trio representing Newcastle and NSW at Juniors and Seniors.
After both moving to Sydney (as NSW Seniors players), Greg and Geoff were prominent members of the University of NSW club, winning 6 1st Grade Premierships (in 8 years) and 11 Sydney Masters Premier League titles (including a record 112 Masters club games undefeated in a consecutive 7 year period).
They both also shared success winning more than 35 NSW and Australian Hockey Championship titles during their careers – Greg with 250 caps (in 32 years) for NSW and Geoff with 150 caps throughout his representative career.
Since 2019 they have re-united to play together at the Sutherland and St George (famous hockey club for Brian Booth and Ron Riley) clubs, winning multiple Sydney Masters titles (5 in past 6 years) and NSW Masters Hockey Championships. Their ‘sixth sense’ on the field when playing together is extraordinary and highlights their strong personal connection after playing together for so many years.
In 2026, Greg and Geoff will play together for Australia (ranked 3rd in the world) in the Masters World Cup in The Netherlands. They are keen to add to their previous international successes (from Asian Internationals titles and World Masters Gold Medal in Sydney) with a Gold Medal in August against 16 other countries with strong challenges likely from England, Germany and The Netherlands.
The long standing and close bond between Greg and Geoff (and their families) highlights the wonderful opportunities that hockey provides, and we wish them both continued good health and happiness with many more years of playing hockey together with continued success.
