“Is this how it starts?”

For many people experiencing brain fog, forgetfulness, or difficulty concentrating, the greatest burden is not always the symptom itself — but the fear of what it might mean.

Especially for those who have witnessed a parent or loved one experience dementia, a forgotten word or misplaced item can carry an enormous emotional weight.

But our brains do not function in isolation. Stress, grief, poor sleep, hormonal changes, inflammation, and the demands of modern life can all influence how clearly we think.

This week on Substack, I explore the difference between cognitive overwhelm and progressive cognitive decline, and why approaching these experiences with curiosity rather than fear can be an important first step.

There is a massive difference between being unwilling to heal and simply not having the capacity to do it.

So many people desperately want to get better, but they’re handed a protocol with 15 different supplements, strict dietary rules, endless appointments, and conflicting advice. It’s total overwhelm. And that cognitive load actually worsens your health.

True healing doesn’t start by adding more to your plate. It starts by cutting the noise, simplifying your day, and giving your brain some actual, deep rest. Drop the expectations and take a breather.

Ever wonder why you’re mentally shattered by 2 PM even if you haven't done much physical work?

When your nervous system is stuck on "high alert," constantly scanning for threats or anticipating the worst, it burns an absolute mountain of cognitive energy. A survival-mode brain never truly rests. It’s working overtime in the background, which leaves bugger-all energy left for memory, concentration, or logic.

Your brain isn't separate from your body. If your nervous system is fried, your focus will be too.

This has to be one of the cruelest part of chronic illness: the very condition that requires you to heal is the exact thing stealing the cognitive capacity you need to do it.

It’s a vicious loop. Illness drains your brain, and a drained brain makes managing your health nearly impossible. The arrow runs both ways.

If you've been feeling like you can't get your head around your own recovery, stop pushing so hard. Before you can execute a massive health plan, you first need to clear enough cognitive space just to catch your breath.

“I know exactly what I need to do to feel better, I just can’t seem to do it.”

Many people assume this gap reflects a lack of motivation, discipline, or willpower.

Yet what if the issue is not laziness at all? What if your mind is simply carrying more than it can reasonably hold?

One of the cruellest aspects of illness is that the very condition requiring healing can impair the cognitive capacity needed to heal.

In this week's article, I explore cognitive barriers, brain fog, chronic stress, and why creating capacity may be one of the most important steps in the healing process.

EP 17: Brain Fog Feels Like Thinking Through Wet Cement

Brain fog isn't just forgetting where you parked the car. It’s trying to think through wet cement, processing info underwater, or trying to read a book while you're absolutely spent.
The worst part? Healing actually requires a massive amount of brainpower. You need to plan, stay consistent, organise appointments, and regulate your emotions.

We need to stop beating ourselves up for "forgetting" and start focusing on getting our nervous systems back to a place of safety first.

Have you ever said to yourself, “I know exactly what I need to do to feel better, I just can't bring myself to do it”?

When we stay stuck in this gap between intention and action, it’s easy to spiral into shame and self-doubt. But what if it isn’t a lack of willpower? What if your mind is simply too overwhelmed to function?

In this episode, we break down the physiological and cognitive barriers to healing. From chronic stress and digital overload to the direct connection between gut inflammation and brain fog, we explore how modern living blocks our mental capacity, and how to finally break the vicious loop of cognitive impairment.

Inside This Episode:
The Intention-Action Gap: Why cognitive overwhelm masquerades as laziness or failure.

The Vicious Loop of Illness: How being sick drains the exact mental energy you need to prepare healthy meals and follow protocols.

The Gut-Brain Axis: How physical factors like systemic inflammation, poor sleep, and hormonal imbalances create physical fog in the brain.

Rewiring Stress: Understanding how chronic stress and hypervigilance physically alter your brain’s memory and attention centres.

Shifting the Narrative: Moving from "What is wrong with me?" to "What has my mind been trying to carry?"

Episode Timestamps:
00:00 When your mind becomes the ultimate barrier to your recovery
01:25 Cognitive barriers, procrastination, and the shame cycle
03:39 What brain fog actually feels like from the inside
05:42 Digital overload and the epidemic of fragmented attention
07:25 How chronic stress physically rewires the brain’s neural pathways
08:25 Trauma, hypervigilance, and the survival mind
09:33 The physiological factors: How hormones, sleep, and the gut drive brain health
11:31 Breaking the shame and overwhelm loop
12:53 Distinguishing normal brain fog from deeper cognitive fears (like dementia)
14:22 Practical steps to reduce your daily cognitive load and recover your focus
16:11 Closing reflection: Giving your mind permission to rest

4 Practical Strategies for Cognitive Support:
Reduce the Load: Simplify your routines down to the absolute essentials, like consistent sleep and basic nourishment. Use lists to externalise your memory.

Protect Your Attention: Designate tech-free zones. Practice single-tasking (reading a physical book, walking without a phone) to rebuild your attention span.

Address Physiological Needs: Calm neuro-inflammation by supporting your gut health and prioritising deep, restorative sleep.

Embrace Gradual Recovery: Clearer mornings and sharper focus won't happen overnight. Celebrate the subtle, tiny shifts in your mental clarity.

Reclaim your mental space:
If your mind is exhausted and you are ready to transition from survival mode back into authentic balance, consider joining our community.

The body is a remarkable keeper of story. Long before a diagnosis is named, long before a specialist is seen or a test is ordered, the body has already been speaking. Through energy levels and sleep quality; through the skin and the gut and the mood; and through the way inflammation moves quietly from one system to another, leaving its signature in places that seem, on the surface, entirely unrelated.

By the time most people arrive in my clinic carrying multiple diagnoses, they have often spent years being told that each condition is its own separate matter. And yet something in them has always sensed otherwise. That the anxiety and the gut pain and the thyroid dysfunction and the fatigue are not strangers to one another. That there is a thread, if only someone would help them find it.

There is. And finding it changes everything. There is a word for this in medicine. Two words, actually.
