🐾 Arthritis in Greyhounds. What every owner needs to know.
Have you noticed your greyhound slowing down lately? Hesitating at the stairs? Those long elegant legs that once launched them over 5.5 metres in a single stride moving just a little differently than they used to?
You are not imagining it. And you are not alone.
At in2greys we are passionate about supporting every single chapter of the greyhound journey — and that means having the conversations that matter most.
What is actually happening inside your greyhound’s body?
The most common form of arthritis in greyhounds is osteoarthritis — a degenerative condition where the cartilage cushioning the joints gradually wears away over time. Without that smooth protective buffer between the bones, inflammation sets in and everyday movement can become genuinely painful for your hound.
It affects approximately one in five dogs and is most commonly seen in senior greyhounds aged 7 and over. As the condition progresses it can impact your greyhound’s ability to eat, play and move comfortably through their day.
Less common but equally important forms include inflammatory arthritis — sometimes linked to immune system conditions — and septic arthritis, which can develop as a result of joint infections.
Why greyhounds are particularly vulnerable.
Here is what makes this especially significant for our breed.
The very anatomy that makes the greyhound the most breathtaking athlete in the dog world — that extraordinary lean frame, minimal body fat, fine bone structure and the physical demands of their racing and athletic history — places unique long term pressure on their joints as they age.
The greyhound’s body has given everything. Every stride. Every sprint. Every moment of pure breathtaking speed. And as responsible greyhound owners it is our responsibility to give back. 🖤
What you can do right now to improve your greyhound’s quality of life.
✅ Speak to your veterinarian early — the sooner arthritis is identified the more effectively it can be managed. Do not wait until your greyhound is visibly struggling.
✅ Gentle, consistent movement — short, regular walks maintain joint mobility without overloading painful areas. Rest alone is not the answer.
✅ Warmth and comfort — greyhounds carry minimal body fat and feel the cold acutely. Warm, well-cushioned bedding directly reduces joint inflammation and stiffness, particularly overnight.
✅ Weight management — even a small amount of additional weight places significant extra load on already compromised joints. Keep your greyhound lean and well nourished.
✅ Joint supplements — omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin are widely supported by veterinary research as beneficial for joint health and inflammation management in dogs.
✅ Hydrotherapy & gentle exercise — water-based therapy is one of the most effective low-impact treatments available for arthritic dogs, supporting movement without joint stress.
✅ Anti-inflammatory veterinary treatment — your vet may recommend non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to manage pain and inflammation. Always follow professional veterinary guidance.
The bottom line.
Arthritis does not have to define your greyhound’s later years. With the right knowledge, the right support and a community around you that truly understands this breed — your hound can continue to live a full, comfortable and deeply loved life. 🖤
That is what in2greys stands for. Every stage. Every chapter. Every greyhound.
