25 years of NSW Jiu Jitsu. What a day. ❤️

To every coach who spent the weekend in the corner, every parent who sat in the stands all day, every first-time competitor who found the courage to step on the mats, every athlete who travelled interstate to be part of it, and every academy that showed up to support the community…

Thank you.

The Autumn Cup was more than just another competition. It felt like a celebration of what this community has built together over the last 25 years.

We saw teammates cheering like family.
Kids having their first matches.
Old friends reconnecting.
New memories being made all across the venue.

From the white belts to the black belts, from the tiny kids divisions to the adult absolutes, the atmosphere all day was something special.

This federation has always belonged to the community, and this weekend was a reminder of how strong that community really is.

Thank you for helping us celebrate 25 years of Jiu Jitsu in New South Wales.

Appreciation Post:

On Sunday, I decided to swing by and support the Autumn Cup with my Jiu Jitsu senpai and brother from another mother, .s.kayoom.23 . Upon entering Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre, we bumped in to the man responsible for 25 years of promoting and growing the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through the NSW BJJ Federation, 6th degree black belt and pioneer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in NSW, .

Always smiling, warm and hospitable, Paulo invited us for a a chat to catch up. We discussed the the early days of the Federation competitions, our current training and he shared some amazing plans, he has in the works for the near future. As we were sitting there at the entrance to the venue, Paulo suggested we take a photo to celebrate the moment, and remember a past filled with many great memories of fighting many matches as a white, blue and purple belt for myself. And watching Adam fight there too as a blue, purple and possibly brown belt (I can’t quite remember 🤔) against other pioneers of the sport.

Incidentally the very backdrop of the photo was one of halls where the NSW BJJ Federation competitions all began, so it was both a fitting and nostalgic moment for us all.

So I thought I’d take a moment to thank and honour Master for his dedication to promoting the art of Jiu Jitsu in NSW and Australia. Paulo was the first Brazilian Black Belt to move to Australia and open up a Jiu Jitsu academy in NSW. A warrior both on and off the mat, Paulo has worked tireless for 25 years now to provide opportunities for the next generation to share the mats and compete under the banner of the . Thank you for everything that you have done for the Jiu Jitsu community, and the work you continue to put in to grow the federation an open up@more opportunities for Jiu Jitsu athletes, coaches and teams. Muito obrigado, Mestre!

Over the last few months, we’ve travelled across New South Wales visiting academies, meeting professors, parents, competitors and students from every stage of the journey.

And honestly, this is what we’ve learned.

Jiu jitsu is still changing lives.
Good people are still the heart of this art.
And all across NSW, there are academies helping raise confident kids, strong communities and lifelong friendships.

For 25 years, the NSW BJJ Federation has had the privilege of watching this community grow.

That’s what makes the Autumn Cup special.

For one day, the NSW jiu jitsu community comes together again.
Different teams.
Different stories.
One shared love for the art.
