Look who welcomed me to Bundeena! 😍🦜

This cheeky cockatoo was sitting right on top of the Bundeena sign like he owns the town!

Still smiling from all your beautiful stories on my last post - family Christmas picnics at Bonnievale, camping, houses coming over by barge. You all made me love Bundeena even more.

Found this perfect bench in Berenice Forster Park, Bundeena - right above Horderns Beach next to the wharf. I had to sit next to her and just watch the water for a while. Who would you bring to sit on this bench with you?

Gunnamatta Bay at LOW TIDE — you could walk to Cronulla! 💙

I took this yesterday — look how far the sand goes out. That little girl in pink is walking right on the sand flats David from Leumeah St (1947) remembered: "beach at low tide, water to the wall at high tide."

You all just filled in the missing piece:

🌊 LOW TIDE SECRETS — What the water hides:
• Wall the length of Gunnamatta Park north to south — 2-3 foot drop top to bottom — now buried, sand built right up to top by 2004 (David Dougherty)
• "Yeap, and walked around to Cronulla at low tide" — Garry Coates — you could walk around the point all the way to Cronulla beach when tide was out!
• Sand flats where incoming tide was good for garfish and whiting — now gone (David)
• 1949 — grass to water, no bench, no concrete — just open sand (Margaret)
• Far end smell at low tide near mangroves — Ric Manley still remembers it!
• At high tide, water came right to the wall.

Gunnamatta Bay at LOW TIDE — do you remember this? 💙

I took this yesterday and it stopped me in my tracks. That building, the sand, the net — at low tide you can walk right across where David from Leumeah St (1947) said was "always a beach at low tide, at high tide water came to the wall — the sand flats."

He said incoming tide was good for garfish and whiting — now long gone.

Yesterday you told me:
⚓️ The ferry is the CURRANULLA — in service since 1939, nicknamed Golden Girl (thank you Rob!)
🏠 Water side Taloombi St — Hill family, Eadies Myf & Brian, Blunts Alan & Margie — swimming and fishing every weekend 1950s-80s
🏨 The Cecil demolished into unit blocks — by 2000 it was starting to resemble Gold Coast, wall was open to cars, just community
🚌 1940s Sunday school picnics from St Cuthberts Allawah by bus to a large covered eating area — no swimming!

And Margaret from 1949: grass to water, no bench, no concrete.

Look at it now — same spot. Little girl in pink walking with mum right on the edge of the flats.

Arrived in paradise! 🛥️🏝️ Just stepped off the ferry from Cronulla and made it to the beautiful Bundeena Wharf. The journey across the bay was stunning, and now I'm standing at the gateway to the Royal National Park, ready for an amazing adventure. The air is so fresh here and the sun is shining – the perfect start to a day of exploration! Time to follow this map and see where it leads.

Sometimes the best escape in Sydney is just a 25-minute ferry ride away. ⛴️✨
​If you ever feel like life is moving too fast, head down to Cronulla Wharf, listen to the water, and watch the historic MV Curranulla float by. Finding peace doesn't always mean booking a long holiday—sometimes it’s just exploring a new pocket of our beautiful city and taking a moment to breathe. 🌊🌿

NO BENCH IN 1949! 😮💙

I posted this bench at Gunnamatta Bay yesterday and Margaret Edwards commented — she lived at 43 Taloombi St WATER SIDE FROM BIRTH in 1949 till 1985 — 36 YEARS on the bay!

She said: "There was no concrete walkway and no seat, the water just came up to the grass."

So this concrete slab under the bench? It wasn't here. This bench wasn't here. It was just grass straight to water.

And 5 people now told me they had to DIVE UNDER the timber pontoon for training group!

1960s — Nettie Maie — Caringbah High students spent many sport afternoons learning to swim here — and everything stopped for Melbourne Cup! 😂

I have 22 stories now from 1949 to 1990s saved — Wanda 8 minute swim, Harry Gibbons lessons, speed boats from Cronulla, Benz bikinis era, sand + water + lunch routine.

🎈NO bench existed in 1949! Water came straight to the grass — 43 Taloombi St resident from birth 1949-1985 just told me 💙 Sitting on this bench at Gunnamatta Bay today...

And I can't stop thinking about all your stories from the last few days.

This exact spot has seen so much:

⭐️1960 — Greg learning sink-or-swim from his mum and now a sea captain in Alaska.
⭐️1965 — Julie scared of oysters on the pylons and seaweed, with changerooms where the floor was JUST SAND.
⭐️1965-67 — Surrey saying the water near the floating pontoon was "so black, scary, deep" after moving from the UK to Kirkwood Rd, Wanda.
⭐️1960s — Kevin doing the 8 MINUTE SWIM for Wanda SLSC with Rob Chapman and Harry Gibbons — lessons and calisthenics in the bay.
⭐️1969 — Maureen, Ellen and Alison all on that scary wooden pontoon together.
⭐️1970s — Wendy's star jump at 8yo, Chantal being made to swim UNDER the pontoon (still nightmares!), and Jill's grandma covering her in vaseline to stay warm.
⭐️Early 80s — Catherine pushing prams on compacted sand because parking was easy, with off-duty flight attendants sunbaking in their Benz bikinis!

And now? Two people walking the Esplanade, boats quiet on the water, and me on this bench.

Sometimes the best therapy is simple:

Take the ferry from Cronulla Wharf to Bundeena. Leave the noise behind.
Walk just over 1km from Bundeena Wharf to Jibbon Beach. One foot in front of the other.

And then... this. A sheltered, crescent beach in the Royal National Park. Calm water. Golden sand. No rush.

Reminder today: You don't need to go far to find peace. You just need to start. One ferry ride. One kilometre. One deep breath at a time.
