One lesson I've learned over the years is that many business problems aren't actually business problems.

They're capability problems in disguise.

A recruitment challenge might really be a leadership challenge.

A delegation issue might really be a decision-making challenge.

Growth changes the role of the owner.

The business eventually requires different capabilities than it did in the beginning.

That's one of the key ideas we'll explore in my upcoming executive briefing, where I'll introduce a practical framework to help owner-led professional service businesses identify what their next stage of growth requires.

If that resonates, I'd love you to join us.

Most owner-led professional service businesses don't become difficult because their founders aren't good at what they do.

They become difficult because growth changes the role.

As your business grows, you're expected to become a strategist, leader, recruiter and decision-maker - often without ever being taught those skills.

It's a challenge I see regularly working alongside founders and partners of professional service businesses.

That's why I'm hosting a complimentary executive briefing next month:
You've Mastered Your Profession… Have You Mastered Business Ownership?

We'll explore Butler & Co's Business Leadership Journey and a practical framework to help you identify the capabilities your business now needs from you, along with the one to three priorities likely to have the greatest impact over the next 90 days.

If you're the founder, owner or partner of an established professional service business and this sounds familiar, I'd love you to join us.

Many owners mistake being needed for being successful.

At first, it feels like control — every decision, every approval, every problem coming back to you. But over time, it becomes the ceiling.

Because real success isn’t measured by how much depends on you.

It’s measured by what still works when you step away.

A business isn’t truly growing if it stops the moment you’re not involved.

Real growth is systems, people, and decisions that keep moving without you in the middle of everything.

He hadn't taken a proper holiday in 4 years. 🏝️❌

Every attempt → the phone started. A client question. A pricing call. A staff issue only HE could solve.

He blamed the team. Wrong. He'd built a business that could only depend on him because letting go felt like losing control.

What fixed it: a sequence → time → delegation → hiring → leadership → structure → succession. One layer at a time. Each made him a little less essential and the business a little stronger.

18 months later: *"I've gone from being the person the business depends on to the leader who helps the business grow."*

It's not the long days that get you. It's 11pm, staring at the ceiling: "Is my real problem cash flow? Revenue? My team? Or… is it me?"

If you've run that list, you're not lacking. You're diagnosing a business you were never trained to lead with the wrong instruments. Most owners guess "we need more leads." Usually that's a symptom.

🗓️ FREE webinar Friday 3 July, 45 mins: how to find what's *really* holding your firm back. New financial year. Stop guessing. Register at the link in bio. Can't make it live? Register anyway — I'll send the replay.

More clients. More staff. More revenue. So why does it feel HARDER?

Every business owner quietly thinks: "I should have this figured out by now." They think everyone else got a manual they missed. They didn't.

The skills that built your firm (expertise, reputation, doing the work) ≠ the skills it needs next: delegating, hiring, accountability, leading.

You're not failing. You've outgrown the old skill set. Every growing firm hits this exact moment.

It's 6:40pm. Your team's gone. You're still signing off the work only you're "allowed" to touch.

The trap nobody warns you about: the better you are at the work, the more the business builds itself around YOU.

Every decision → your desk. Growth → more things waiting on you.

That's not a time problem. It's a role problem. You're still the business’s best technician… when the business needs you to be its leader.
