New ONYX BJJ and Pedro Sauer stickers are officially on the mats, and they look so good. Small change, big pride. There’s something special about seeing our name and association right there at our feet every session.

You never really know what someone’s carrying, even the ones who seem to have it all together. Especially those who’ve been taught to just push through in silence.

Here at ONYX, we’re a team both on the mats and off them. If something’s weighing on you, talk to a coach, talk to a training partner, or just tell someone you’re not okay. That’s not weakness. That’s strength.

Every child on our mats has a fair, genuine chance of moving up. Nobody gets left behind. Progress just looks a little different for each kid, and that’s okay.

At every promotion, Prof Ian lets students know exactly what to work on for their next stripe or belt. If you’re ever unsure where your child stands, feel free to ask Prof directly for a few tips on what to focus on next.

If Prof notices a child working through something tricky, he’ll gently let them know what needs a bit more attention, always with encouragement, never criticism.

It’s also worth mentioning that promotions aren’t only about skill. Good behaviour on the mats matters too, things like listening to instructions and respecting the space and each other. If those areas need some work, it may mean a promotion takes a little longer, and that’s simply part of helping our kids grow into well rounded students both on and off the mats.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often called “the gentle art,” and once you step on the mats, you’ll understand why. It’s built on leverage, timing, and technique rather than brute strength, which means people of any age, size, or fitness level can learn, grow, and thrive.

Physically, BJJ builds full body strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness in a way that feels engaging rather than repetitive. Every class is a little different, and your body adapts in ways that carry into everyday life, better balance, better posture, more energy.

Mentally, it’s often described as physical chess. You’re constantly problem solving, reading your partner, and adjusting your approach in real time, building focus, patience, and confidence that extends well beyond the mats.

There’s also the community. Training BJJ means training alongside people who show up for each other, celebrate progress, and push one another to grow.

Whether your goal is fitness, self defense, stress relief, or simply trying something new, BJJ offers a path that grows with you. Every belt, every stripe, is proof of consistent effort paying off.

🌅 6am ALL LEVELS classes are landing on Tuesdays AND Wednesdays! Rise and grind, early birds.

👋 SAYING GOODBYE TO
❌ Tuesday 11am Fundamentals
❌ Tuesday 7:15pm Advanced Gi
❌ Tuesday 7:15pm All Levels

⏰ GETTING MORE MAT TIME
Tuesday Fundamentals (6:15pm) now runs until 7:45pm, giving you an extra 30 mins to drill it in!
Wednesday All Levels (6:15pm) now runs until 7:45pm too!

These changes weren’t easy to land on. You’ve been asking for more morning classes, and we love that energy, so we wanted to make it happen. It also gives Prof Ian a little breathing room in his week, which we’re all for.
