This week at rugby camp I was lucky to have access to the Live Cast from Silver Fern. It’s a mobile, wireless monitor that allows you to airplay from your phone instantly. It’s awesome for capturing training footage and giving players instant feedback on their performance.

With the group shown, we looked at our speed to arrive at the attacking breakdown. After a few reps of the drill, I used the Live Cast to show what the best performers in the group were doing (quick off the floor, speed across the ground, dropping body height early and winning the shoulder battle). I challenged them all to match this. When we went back into the drill the intensity went through the roof! 😤 Without me having to say too much, the players had such a clear idea of what success looked like and were desperate to be the next player to be featured on the screen! 📺 It’s a great teaching tool that really motivated these players. Thanks to Newington Rugby Association for letting us borrow it!

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when coaching youth players is developing confidence in contact.

Footwork, body height, head placement, wrap and finish. It’s a lot to remember before you even add in the fear of getting hurt! 🤕 Our method is to start small and simple, then gradually layer on the difficulty until it looks like the game of rugby. With every step, we’re trying to get players to experience small wins and learn kinaesthetically what a good contact feels like. Low, safe, and effective. There’s few things better than seeing a player surprise himself by tackling someone twice their size and realising, when you get the technique right, it doesn’t hurt at all! This builds confidence. 😤
