The Sussex Panthers Ladies League Tag team took to the field for their very first game, facing off against The Basin in what was always going to be a tough introduction to the competition. While the final scoreline read 44ā0, it doesnāt tell the full story of the heart, effort, and determination shown by this brand-new side.
With several players stepping onto the field for their first-ever game and no substitutes on the bench, the Panthers dug deep from start to finish. Their defence was a standout, with countless brave tags and a refusal to give up, even under constant pressure. The team also showed glimpses of attacking promise, with some strong runs that gained valuable metres and built confidence. There was also some great tagging throughout the game, with Chelsea and Sarah standing out for their consistent defensive efforts. Chelsea was a strong first receiver and played an important role in setting up the teamās plays, being an integral link in the Panthersā attack. Rylee also impressed in the centres with great communication all game, along with some strong runs and effective tags. She also had a strong kicking game on kick-offs, gaining good distance and helping the team get up the field. Kaylee had a great moment in the second half, breaking through the line for a strong run that lifted the teamās energy. Sonia, in her first ever game, showed great courage and determination, making some fantastic tags. Payton was outstanding in defence with some amazing tags, always switched on and reading the play well. When she did take the ball into attack, she was difficult to pull down, making strong and determined runs.
Mia and Sarah were key voices in defence, showing excellent communication throughout the game and helping hold the team together under pressure. Their leadership and organisation in defence made a big difference, keeping the Panthers connected and focused.
Jazz, our pocket rocket dummy half and the shortest player on the field, was everywhere. She brought energy, speed, and determination to every play, keeping momentum flowing with quick thinking and sharp service. Darting out of dummy half and taking on the line with confidence, she kept the defence guessing all game. Her work rate and composure in such a key role were outstanding.
Duck, who was originally set to play on the wing, really stepped up for the team, filling in wherever she was needed. She worked tirelessly, sprinting down the sidelines to tag opponents and applying constant pressure, showing great versatility and commitment.
One of the highlights of the match came from Lily, who pulled off a fantastic intercept, showing great awareness and timing. She also made an incredible effort to tackle an opposition player out over the sideline, leaving the crowd in disbelief. In a moment that had everyone talking, she also managed to accidentally take out the refereeāwho just happened to be one of our own coachesāalong with an opposition player in the same play!
A special mention to Renee, whose defensive effort was nothing short of epic. She gave it her all until unfortunately hurting her hamstring, forcing her to come off and restāsomething no one could fault given the effort she had already put in.
Bec, although out today following surgery, still made a huge effort to turn up and support her team. She should have been at home resting in bed, but instead chose to be there cheering on the Panthers, showing true team spirit and commitment.
Despite the result, this game marked an important first step for the Sussex Panthers. The effort, teamwork, and resilience on display are a strong foundation to build on, and with more experience under their belts, this team is only going to grow stronger.
Well done, Panthersāplenty to be proud of in your first game! š¾
