5 rules to pick the BEST exercises for muscle growth

1. The target muscle is the limiting factor.

For example - if you’re trying to train your chest, that should be the first muscle that is limiting you upon reaching failure, not your triceps/shoulders etc.

2. It’s stable.

The more co-ordination required, the higher the perception of effort and the less you’ll be able to focus on the target muscle.

3. It’s loadable.

Progressive overload is key for muscle growth. If it’s too hard to load or there’s a cap on how much weight or reps you can add, you won’t be able to achieve this effectively.

4. It doesn’t beat up your joints.

Pain and discomfort will stop you from properly hitting the target muscle and progressing on it. If it feels good, you’ll be able to push it harder for longer and minimise injury along the way.

5. You enjoy it.

If the exercise isn’t the most “optimal” but it feels good, ticks off most of these boxes and you actually enjoy it - you’ll be more motivated to push it hard and progress on it for longer.

“Calorie tracking is obsessive”

For most people with serious physique goals, simply “eating clean” or “eating more” isn’t enough, especially if you don’t yet have the knowledge or experience on how to reach those goals.

So before dismissing calorie tracking as obsessive, consider this:

Without data, how will you know what has or hasn’t worked when progress stalls?

How will you know what needs to change?

Or by how much?

And how will you make sure you reach your goal within a specific timeframe?

Tracking calories isn’t about obsession.

It’s about reducing trial and error and being efficient.

Because constantly second guessing, and changing things without any real data is way more obsessive than simply tracking your calories in the first place.

When you track your calories, you learn exactly what it takes to reach your goal, how long it will realistically take, and how to maintain that result long term.
