First season in Australia🏀

We sat down with Zach Hinton during a recovery session to chat about his first year playing NBL1 basketball in Australia.

Zach’s played basketball all over the world, and at 31, he’s experienced enough to have seen plenty of different leagues, teams and environments. He rates NBL1 as one of the best competitions he’s played in.

His first season with Keilor also ended up being a pretty special one, with the NBL1 Men making finals for the first time.

Individually, though, the season wasn’t always straightforward.
There were stretches where Zach wasn’t performing the way he wanted to. Rather than letting that dictate his season, he kept working, made adjustments and found ways to contribute.

We saw plenty of that work firsthand. Zach was a regular at UAC throughout the season, getting on court, using the gym and making recovery part of his routine.

At this stage of his career, after playing as much basketball as he has, he still genuinely loves playing the game.
And maybe that’s part of why he’s still doing it.

You won't always play well. Things won't always go according to plan. Your role might change and you might have to adapt.
The work will always take care of you.

Congrats to Zach and the Keilor NBL1 Men on a great season 👏

Westside Summit officially welcomes the Sour Silverbacks 🦍

Made up of two squads coming together out of Broadmeadows, the Sour Silverbacks will look to play fast.

Expect them to push the ball in transition, apply pressure and look for opportunities before the defence has a chance to get set.

If they can control the tempo, they’ll be a tough matchup. Slowing them down and making them play in the half court could be the key.

Really appreciate the kind words from Thomas ❤️🖤

We obviously love hearing that his son’s game has improved, but hearing that the family enjoys being around UAC means just as much to us.

We want our athletes to get better, but we also want them to enjoy coming in, enjoy being around their coaches and feel comfortable in the environment they’re training in.

Thanks for being part of UAC, Thomas. We really appreciate the support.

Westside Summit officially welcomes the Longbois 💗

Repping Caroline Springs, the Longbois look set to bring a bit of volume shooting to Westside Summit.

They like to play fast, they’re not afraid to let it fly from deep, and they won’t spend much time overcomplicating things — get downhill, take the open shot, defend the other end and keep moving.

Their willingness to play quickly and back themselves could make them an awkward team to settle against. The challenge for everyone else will be keeping the game on their terms instead of getting dragged into the Longbois’ pace.

The work will always look after you

Landon Seaman has been cut from teams before.
He kept working, kept improving, went on to play college basketball in the US and spent this past season playing NBL1 with Keilor Thunder.

He was also a regular at UAC West throughout the season, getting work in two or three times a week.

A good reminder for younger athletes that not every setback needs to be some massive defining moment.
Sometimes you just keep working.

You might not get the opportunity straight away. You might not get recognised for it straight away.
But keep putting the work in and eventually it has a way of looking after you.

Congrats on the great season at
Good luck in Luxembourg Lando!

Getting through the first quarter feeling good is one thing. Being able to move well, make good decisions and execute late in the game when you’re tired is another 😅

And that applies whether you’re 14 or 41.

For juniors, games get quicker and more physical as they move through age groups and levels. If their body isn’t prepared for that increase, it becomes harder to consistently perform the skills they’ve been working on.

For adults, it’s usually a little different. Work gets busier, training becomes less consistent and suddenly the game feels a lot harder than it used to.

Either way, basketball fitness isn’t just about being able to run for longer.
Strength, conditioning, movement quality and recovery all contribute to how well you can continue to play when fatigue starts setting in.

That’s why we like combining basketball with strength and conditioning rather than treating them as completely separate things.

For some athletes, the goal is performing at a higher level.
For others, it’s simply being able to play the game they enjoy without feeling completely cooked after ten minutes.

Both are pretty good reasons to train.

Westside Summit officially welcomes the Green Machines

Coming out of Broadmeadows, the Green Machines are built around offence. They’ve got plenty of guys willing to shoot it, they won’t hesitate from three, and they’re comfortable playing a high-volume style.

If they get going early, they can put points up quickly. The question will be whether teams can slow them down and force them into tougher looks.

A lot of people don’t actually hate training. They just get bored of going to the gym with nothing in particular to train for. You go in, do the same exercises, maybe jump on the treadmill, put your headphones in and go home.

If you’re training towards a specific goal, that can be great. But if you’re just trying to stay fit and healthy, it can get repetitive pretty quickly.

That’s a big part of why we run our adult Lab sessions differently.
You can come in and scrimmage for an hour, get plenty of movement in and actually enjoy your cardio.
You can jump into a structured basketball session and work on your game.
Then your strength and conditioning has a purpose too. You’re working on moving better, getting stronger and building qualities that can actually help you when you get back on the court.

And you’re doing most of it around other people rather than training by yourself every week.

We’ve got people in their 20s still pushing to play at a higher level, people in their 30s learning basketball for the first time, and people in their 40s getting back into the game after putting it down for years.

You don’t have to be an elite athlete.
You don’t even have to be particularly good at basketball.
Sometimes having a sport you enjoy just gives you a better reason to keep training.
And if you’re going to spend a few hours every week trying to stay fit anyway, you may as well find something you actually look forward to doing, true?

Our August Member of the Month goes to Harrison 👏

It’s pretty rare for one of our juniors to take this one out, but Harrison has absolutely earned it.

Harrison is an Under 14 athlete currently playing rep basketball with Broadmeadows Broncos, domestic basketball and is also part of our WPBL program.

On top of all of that, he’s part of our Elevate program at UAC.

Elevate gives our athletes more access to the facility alongside structured strength and conditioning, so they can start taking more ownership over their development outside of their normal team training.

And Harrison definitely makes use of it.

He’s constantly in the facility. He gets his shots up, gets his strength and conditioning work done and is probably one of the most consistent workers we have in the room.

22 visits in August alone.

But it’s not really the number that earned him Member of the Month. It’s how he goes about it when he’s here.

He works hard, listens, wants to improve and is always keen to be involved, whether that’s training, tournaments or anything else happening around UAC.

Most importantly, he’s just a genuinely good kid and we’ve loved having Harrison and his family become such a big part of the UAC West community.

Very well deserved ❤️🖤

And thanks again to for looking after our Member of the Month with a hoodie of his choice.

There’s a reason we like athletes to start with an assessment.
It gives us a baseline.

We can look at where they’re currently at, identify the areas that are actually limiting them, and then make decisions around what their training should focus on.
Sometimes that’s shooting. Sometimes it’s their movement. Sometimes it’s strength, footwork, decision making or something completely different.

And sometimes what an athlete wants to work on isn’t necessarily what they need to work on. That’s an important distinction.

If you’re going to get assessed, you also have to be willing to understand and trust the process that comes after it. Otherwise there isn’t much point in paying someone for their expertise and then ignoring the answer because it wasn’t the answer you wanted.

From there, we can train those areas and then re-screen our athletes every 6 to 8 weeks. That lets us compare them against where they started, see what has actually improved and make adjustments when we need to.

Because without a baseline, you’re mostly relying on feel.
They trained hard.
They got sweaty.
They did a lot of reps.
Cool.

But did they actually get better?
That’s what we want to be able to answer.
