Vale – Stavros “Steve” Magafas
Stavros “Steve” Magafas will be remembered as a warm, charismatic, and deeply loved member of his family and community, whose stories, humour, and presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Born in Egypt, where a vibrant Greek community shaped his early years, Stavros carried with him a lifetime of rich memories and experiences. As a young man, he took to the seas as a merchant seaman, embracing adventure and hard work. His journey eventually brought him to Australia, where he famously stepped ashore as a young lad when his ship docked—beginning a new chapter that would define the rest of his life.
Stavros married his beloved wife Vicki, and together they built a life grounded in love, resilience, and family. Dad and Vicki first settled in Palmerston Street, Carlton, before moving his young family to Racecourse Road, Flemington in 1969. After many humble yet happy years, they later moved to Cawood Drive in Sunshine, where they built their home and created a lifetime of cherished memories.
He is survived by his three children—Nick, Irene, and Peter—who were the pride of his life. All three became actively involved in the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club, a place that also became very special to Stavros. In his later years, he was a familiar and much-loved presence around the club. Known for his popularity among members, he enjoyed sharing a celebratory beer and engaging in lively conversation.
A natural storyteller, Stavros had a gift for captivating those around him. Whether recounting tales of his seafaring days or reflecting on his life’s journey, his stories were filled with humour, wisdom, and authenticity—bringing people together and leaving them smiling.
Stavros’ legacy lives on through his family, his stories, and the many friendships he formed throughout his life. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, and a treasured member of his community.
The funeral service will be held at Agios Antonios Greek Orthodox Church, Armstrong Street, Sunshine West, on Wednesday 13 May 2026, commencing at 11:00am, followed by a wake in the church hall at the same address. The family invites all to attend and celebrate Stavros’ 96 years.
We extend our sincere condolences to the Magafas family—Nick, Irene, and Peter, their partners, and all his grandchildren—during this difficult time.
He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
