In Loving Memory of Roy and Nola Thompson 🤍🤍🕊️🕊️
It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the recent passing of two of the Sunshine Coast’s most extraordinary souls, Roy and Nola Thompson. After an incredible 69 years of marriage, they passed away within just days of each other.
While Nola has been privately remembered by her family, Roy’s public funeral service will be held today at 11:00 am at Stella Maris Catholic Church in Maroochydore. As a club, we join our community in celebrating his life, leadership, and unmatched generosity.
Roy and Nola’s immense philanthropy was always driven by a deep love for family and community. Their incredible support of Maroochy Beach Gymnastics directly touched the lives of so many young athletes, including their own beloved grandchildren, Kobi, Tully, and Rory.
Following the devastating May 2017 fire that completely destroyed our facility, Roy and Nola stepped forward with unparalleled kindness. Their profound generosity provided the critical lifeline our club needed to rebuild. Thanks to them, we were able to fully finish our training pit, the state-of-the-art high bar and rings canopy, and the spectator seating that sits proudly above it. It is a space filled with life, where grandson Kobi could often be seen from the Thompson stand, named in his grandparents' honour, performing extraordinary skills on the apparatus.
This world class facility remains a permanent reminder of their devotion to helping young people thrive.
The impact of Roy and Nola's contribution reached far beyond our local shores. Their support elevated our facility to an international standard, allowing us to host prestigious global visitors, including: the Scottish Men’s Gymnastics Team in their lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, International competitors from New Zealand, athletes from the Philippines and Japan's Men's and Women's National Team coaches.
Roy and Nola never sought the spotlight for their profound giving, but the opportunities they created will continue to shape the lives of Sunshine Coast gymnasts for decades to come.
We extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to the Thompson family. Thank you, Roy and Nola. Your kindness, vision, and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
