Remembering Maureen Kear 💛
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend, Maureen Kear.
It’s hard to find the right words to capture someone like Maureen — because she was, in every sense, the beating heart of Sunbury. This isn’t just a personal loss, it’s a loss for our whole community.
Maureen was everywhere — if it was Sunbury, she was there. Lending a hand, having a say, giving her time, her laughter, her care. She never did anything halfway. Everything she touched, she poured herself into — with heart, humour, and a fierce love for people.
Her life was one of service, of giving, of helping. She gave decades of herself to our town — through Rotary, SunFest, the Neighbourhood Kitchen, gymnastics, the Uncle Bobs Club, and countless other groups and causes. Her work was recognised far and wide, but those of us who knew her didn’t need the medals or awards to see her greatness. It was in her actions, her energy, and her spirit.
When I first joined the SunFest committee as a young member, Maureen welcomed me with open arms — that was her way. She was warmth and encouragement personified. She was an embrace — support and strength, laughter and song, determination and heart.
She felt deeply. She sang loudly. She laughed fully. She loved wholly.
Maureen was named one of the 175 Faces of Sunbury during our community’s 175th birthday — and that feels so right, because she truly was one of the faces, one of the voices, and one of the souls of this place.
Our town is richer for having had her — and it will feel her absence deeply.
To Maureen’s family and friends, I send my love, my thanks, and my deepest condolences. Sunbury has lost one of its brightest lights. But her legacy will live on — in every event she helped bring to life, every person she inspired, and every act of kindness she sparked in others.
Please, if you knew Maureen, share your stories and memories below. Let’s fill this space with the laughter and love she brought into all our lives. 🌻
