🥋 Deepen Your Kata Knowledge! 🥋

Kata is far more than a set of movements — it’s a living expression of technique, history, focus, and discipline. But with dozens of kata in the Sh*to-Ryu system, understanding their names, pronunciations, meanings, lineage, and applications can get overwhelming.

That’s why we’re excited to share “The Ultimate Kata Knowledge Table” — a resource built from 40 years of training and research. It covers 42 Sh*to-Ryu kata with:

• Names (in Romaji & Kanji)
• Phonetic pronunciations & audio files
• Key facts: techniques, history, lineage
• Searchable layout to find what you need, when you need it

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been training for years, this tool helps you connect more deeply with each kata — not just memorise it, but truly understand it.

🌟 Godoshin – Karate’s Hidden Wisdom
Have you ever heard of Godoshin (五道心) — the five guiding principles of traditional karate?

Passed down through generations, these principles remind us that karate is more than technique — it's a lifelong path of character, mindset, and spirit.

In this short video, we explore the meaning and message behind Godoshin, and how it can deepen your understanding of the art, both inside and outside the dojo.

WHAT DOES “OSU” REALLY MEAN? 🤔

If you’ve trained in karate, you’ve probably heard the word “Osu” — shouted in the dojo, online, everywhere.

But have you ever wondered where it really comes from… and whether it belongs in traditional karate?

In this new episode of Karate Bites, I share my personal story — including a conversation with Mabuni Kenzo Soke (son of Sh*to-Ryu founder Kenwa Mabuni) that completely changed my understanding of the term.

🎙️ Watch here: 👉 https://youtu.be/ajD_E05u4po

Is “Osu” a sign of respect, or misunderstood?
Why do some schools embrace it — and others avoid it?
How should we approach tradition in karate?
If this resonates with your own experience — I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Drop a comment below 👇 — do you use “Osu” in your dojo?

Our first Gasshuku in Australia was held in Brisbane from 26 to 28 July 2024. We were privileged to have Tsukasa Mabuni attend from Japan as well as Sakai Shihan, Kurose Shihan and Tashiro Shihan. Members from Singapore and New Zealand also made the trip along with members from Western Australia and New South Wales. Thanks to Garry Edward’s Shihan and his team for organising and hosting a great event at the Redlands Sh*to-Ryu Dojo.
