THE KINGS OF STIRLING

As with the Pavilion, the original work on the Oval and the creation of the Steps was funded by donations from the community. One such effort raised nearly £100 ( about $10,000 in todays money ) in two weeks through the auspices of the “Kings” of Stirling.
Each King represented a particular sport, the results were as follows.

1st Bowls. Mr. H. Quayle £28 9/7 raised by raffles, canvass and a dance.
2nd. Cricket. Mr. H. J. Garrod £27 7/9 raised by euchre parties, raffles and canvassing.
3rd. Tennis. Mr. C. Fewster £15 5/6 raised by social functions, raffles and personal canvass.
4th. Racing. Mr. Jack Carroll £11 3/3 raised by card evening, raffle and personal canvass.
5th. Football. Mr. J. H. Winter £7 5/- raised by personal canvass.

At a musical evening held in June 1936 at the Stirling Institute Mr. H. Quayle was duly crowned by Uncle Bert Woolley with Mr. F. Chardon officiating.

In the image below we can see the volunteers at work cutting the bank where the steps will go.

How it all began……

An excerpt from the Mt. Barker Courier article of 21st. November 1935.

AMPHITHEATRE IN THE HILLS

What voluntary work is doing for Stirling.

Until the end of last winter, although Stirling possessed a very beautiful natural site for an oval, the oval itself was frequently so waterlogged as to be unfit for play, but by the time the next football season comes around, it is safe to prophesy that Stirling will own a perfect sports arena worthy of staging any interstate, or indeed international football or cricket match, and capable of accomodating a very vast audience of onlookers, affording to all a splendid view.

The Stirling Pavilion Foundation acknowledges the traditional owners of this land and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

THE STIRLING PAVILION JOURNEY

A whole generation has come and gone since the Stirling Oval land was bequeathed to the community by J. & A.G. Johnston Ltd.
Once a paddock, the land was transformed in the 1930s by a dedicated team of local volunteers who toiled, by hand, to create the oval, retaining walls and impressive staircase that would mark the Centenary of South Australia.
An open, grandstand style pavilion to view events was part of the overall concept but WW2 interveined and finances dried up.
Now we are planning to bring the original vision into the 21st century, providing state of the art functionality in a charming stone and glass building that blends with the history and character of the township.
The current custodians of J. & A.G. Johnston Ltd. fully support the proposal, seeing it as completely consistent with the terms of the original Deed of Trust.
It will be an enduring legacy for our community - for current and future generations to enjoy.
