I’m sure you remember Aesops fable of The Tortoise and The Hare.
I think of that every time I see posts and ads for online programs with headings like these -
“Lose 12Kgs in 12 weeks or your money back”
“The 6 week shred! Results guaranteed”
12Week Body Transformation
“I used to think weight loss and being incredibly good-looking was impossible, until I found this life saving bio hack! Click here and never have to put in any effort again!”
Or something like that. I’m sure you know the ones I’m talking about.
Perhaps you’ve tried programs like these only to find the recommendations were too hard to follow.
Perhaps you couldn’t function on 1200 calories/day…
or perhaps you were their poster child and your image is the one on their before and after pics…
but you’ve since crashed and burned and now you’re even worse off than before
Getting healthy and losing weight shouldn’t be this hard!
If a dietary or lifestyle change is unsustainable what’s the point?
By very definition you cannot sustain it…so any changes you see won’t last!
Right?
From that simple fact we can gather that in order to lose weight, gain weight, get healthy or whatever you’re trying to achieve with your body…
any change you make must be easy and enjoyable enough…
that you can keep it up!
Did we not learn anything from the Tale of the Tortoise and the Hare?
Why is everyone always in such a hurry?
Why not the 12 month shred?
Or 24kgs in 24 months guaranteed!
I know how many people there are out there who have given up losing weight and getting healthier in the process because they’ve tried so many things so many times and “nothing works!”.
Because they couldn’t lose the 12 kgs in 12 weeks
Or they did and put all back on and then some because it was too hard to keep up
If this is you…
Let me tell you this…
You didn’t fail the program/s
The program/s failed you!
They set you up to fail from the word GO
By creating unrealistic expectations
If you set your goals for 12 months or 24 months instead
You’d be doing a walk rather than a sprint
Then pacing yourself, you could build habits around food and exercise that are nourishing and that you can keep up long term.
You could try implementing one change or perhaps two at a time…
and track things like whether or not it’s enjoyable, whether its helping you to look and feel better and whether or not its worth keeping on with…
and then reward yourself for all your hard work!
Doesn’t that sound more sensible?
Health is much like money.
If you put a little bit away every week
And invest in tried and tested assets
in 5 years you could buy a house
I’m not saying it’s going to be easy and won’t require effort. It most certainly will require effort!
But just not so much effort that it exhausts you.
Because just like anything, when you take small steps, over time you can travel a long way!
If you would like to learn a process for making changes to what you eat…
that includes learning to listen to your body rather than forcing things upon it…
and making sustainable changes to your dietary and lifestyle…
then type ‘Me me me ’ or something along those lines in the comments
and I’ll tell you about how I can help you do this and never have to go on a stupid diet ever again.
