Pregnancy Pilates favourites 🤍

Side-lying exercises are some of my absolute favourite movements to teach during pregnancy because they’re gentle, supportive, and incredibly effective for pelvic stability, glute strength, circulation, posture, and overall comfort as the body changes.

In this session with beautiful Kiara, we focused on:
✨ Gluteus medius strengthening for pelvic stability
✨ Deep hip rotator activation
✨ Calf pump work to support circulation and varicose veins
✨ Gentle shoulder and side-body opening
✨ Core support without excessive abdominal pressure
✨ Working safely with the changes created by relaxin during pregnancy

One of the most important things during prenatal movement is supporting the body well. As pregnancy progresses, adding pillows under the abdomen, waist, or between the knees can make side-lying exercises so much more comfortable and aligned.

I also love using mindful cueing like:
• “Lift through the waist”
• “Reach long through the leg”
• “Push through the heel”
• “Stay steady through the pelvis”

These small details help create strength, stability, and connection without overworking the body.

Pregnancy Pilates isn’t about pushing harder — it’s about moving smarter, supporting the body, and helping women feel strong, stable, and empowered throughout every trimester 🤍

What is a Synovial Joint? - Why Your Knee Glides So Smoothly 🧠 Synovial Joint Explained

The knee is a synovial joint — designed for smooth, controlled movement.

It includes:
✔️ a number of bones - not just one
✔️Articular cartilage
✔️ Synovial fluid
✔️ Joint capsule

Together, these reduce friction and support healthy movement.

Tendons of the Knee - Quadriceps to Patella: The Knee Tendon Chain Explained🤔

The quadriceps tendon connects into the patella and continues as the patella tendon to the tibia.
This powerful chain helps you straighten your knee and move with control.

If this system isn’t working well, it can impact strength, stability, and knee health.

👉 Learn how to strengthen and support this in real clients inside my Pilates Anatomy course.

I’m so excited 🤩 I’ve just received this incredible knee joint model from 66fit — and I’m obsessed!

It bends… it glides… and yes, it even rotates slightly 👀

Something many people don’t realise is that after a knee replacement, that subtle rotation can be reduced — which really highlights how beautifully complex the knee is.

Let’s take a quick look at knee anatomy:

✨ The knee is made up of four bones — femur, tibia, fibula, and patella (kneecap)
✨ The patella glides along the femur in what we call the patellofemoral joint
✨ The menisci (medial & lateral) are those C-shaped “cushions” that act as shock absorbers and help protect the joint
✨ Ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL & LCL) provide stability — preventing too much forward, backward, or side-to-side movement
✨ The quadriceps tendon connects into the patella and continues as the patella tendon down to the tibia

The knee is a synovial joint — meaning it’s designed for smooth movement, with articular cartilage and synovial fluid helping everything glide with ease.

This little model is going to be such a powerful teaching tool — especially as I dive deeper into meniscus health in my upcoming Active Ageing masterclass 🦵

📅 May 17 — we’ll be exploring meniscus tears, knee function, and how Pilates can support strong, resilient joints.

Knee Ligaments Explained - ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL… What Do They Actually Do? 🤔

The knee relies on four key ligaments for stability:
✔️ ACL (prevents forward movement)
✔️ PCL (prevents backward movement)
✔️ MCL & LCL (control side-to-side stability)

These are commonly injured — especially in sport — but understanding them changes how you move and teach.

Meniscus Explained - Meniscus Tears Explained 🦵 The Knee’s Shock Absorber

The menisci are two C-shaped cushions inside your knee that act as shock absorbers and protect your joint.

As we age, these can become more vulnerable to degenerative tears — but the right movement can help support knee health.
