SLAINTE NORM MCCULLOUGH ..... Our Irish Norm
Today we attended the wake for our kind, generous, jovial, funny Irish friend and fellow bowler, and what a wonderful send-off his family gave him. It was a delight to be there with so many others from our club and community to celebrate a man much loved and respected in St Helens.
The second half of the Guinness Twins, the second member of the Three Amigos, has left us, but he has left us with many fond memories. Mention must be made of his very effective tactic at social bowls, of waiting til his opponent was mid-delivery and asking, innocently, 'Have you heard the one about ....?"
And, to then Club President, "We've bought you a teeshirt for Christmas .... you'll wear it, won't you? You'll look grrreeeaaat!"
We remember his jokes, his work ethic around the Club, his singing, his kindness, integrity and loyalty.
He is now at rest, with Nancy and with Eric. Vale Norm.
"May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

MAD MARCH PAIRS CARNIVAL
sponsored by
BAY OF FIRES FLORIST and
BAYSIDE HOTEL
We had a wonderful weekend on the green and in the clubhouse last weekend. Our carnival bowlers were again joined by bowlers from the Australian Postal Institute and the company was great.
The competition was nail-bitingly close and decided by only one point between first and second.
Top five results were:
5th Helen Pola & Craig Bennett (Scottsdale) 22 points, 15 shots up, 32 ends
4th Valerie Banks & Kerrie Davern (St Helens/St Marys) 22.5 pts, 5 shots up, 33 ends
3rd Jane Pickett & John Vincent (St Helens) 24.5 pts, 31 shots up, 33 ends
2nd Greg Lillico & Shaun McCarthy (Ulverstone) 26.5 pts, 29 shots up, 33 ends
Winners Bill Napier & Tony Pickett (St Helens) 27.5 pts, 46 shots up, 39 ends (they came from the clouds after a poor start on Saturday!)
Highlights: having three of our four juniors (Pelican Chicks) competing and bowling well on both days AND
the magnanimous and generous gesture by Greg Lillico and Shaun McCarthy in donating some of their prize money to our Junior Development Fund because of the way the girls played. What a kind thing to do!
Lucky Losers: Caitlyn Curran and Ray Firth; Diane Soimers and Rodney Treloggen
Lucky Number Cards were won by Jane Pickett and Craig Bennett and raffle winners were Valerie Banks, Caitlyn Curran, Jenny Waldron and Graeme from the API.

We have so many people to thank for making the weekend such a success:
* our magnificent sponsors: Bay of Fires Florist and Bayside Hotel
* Ian Blades and Tim Watson for setting up the green and manning the bar
* Tony Pickett and helpers for packing away
* our sensational catering team, headed by Liz Jansen and including Jenny Waldron, Di Somers, Di Harris, Jane Pickett, Ae Cottam, Leonie Mitchell, Tony Pickett, Jacqui Kennedy and all those who donated produce or food
* Di and Lindsay Harris and Jane and Tony Pickett for running the API dinner on Saturday night
* Damien Thomas from the API for his fabulous organisation and liaison, and all their lovely people who joined us
* all the players who participated with such sportsmanship, good fellowship and fun on and off the green. Thanks for encouraging the juniors - they learned heaps!
This was the last carnival to be held on our beautiful but aging green. Next one is the June Long Weekend Fours ..... we'd love you to come along and try your bowls out on our new green!
