The Basin Radio Yacht Club Inc

The Basin Radio Yacht Club is a group of like minded yachting individuals who relish the sailing and competition of radio controlled yachts. We mainly race from the Jetty at the end of Island Point Road, St Georges Basin, near Nowra on the South Coast of NSW. Basin Radio Yacht Club members look forward to sailing every Tuesday and Saturday and enjoy the social frie

ndship that has developed within the group around the sailing of Soling one metre yachts

We only sail the Soling One Metre Class Yacht as it keeps the competition even. The Solings are purchased in kit form and have all been assembled by their owners

We have gained much experience in Sailing and building and are able to help with advice and where to purchase Soling kits and components. Ask for a brochure

DF 95 Shoalhaven Heads Sailing Report Friday the 21st of May 2021.

A dull and cold autumn morning, with some dark clouds that fortunately did not bring rain. There was a light but swinging westerly wind that fell away a bit (necessitating an early lunch) and then came in from the South. The day was great with very spirited racing, flat water and very little w**d.

The course set was a standard triangle, windward and return, triangle then a short work to an "off course" finish" between a buoy and the end of the jetty. Handicap starts after the first race.

The "incident" of the day was when Dave went to get his boat on the other sand bank where it had beached itself after refusing to talk to him. His 95 was aground, the rescue boat was aground so it was reasonable to assume that the water was not deep. However there was a hole that he stepped into - up to his waist.

Which prompts the nursery rhyme

Davey Jones went to rescue
His boat on the other bank
He stepped in a puddle right up to his muddle
Right up to his waist he sank

DF 65 Sailing Results Shoalhaven Heads Thursday the 20th of May 2021
Hi Ladies and Gents
A strong westerly greeted us so we quickly selected B Rigs for our 65's. Well everybody except Russell who tried his A Rig but got overpowered and went home at morning tea to get his B rig.
5 skippers with DF 65's and Kevin W who was trialling his IOM with a B Rig. It went very smoothly and looked great.
The 5 DF 65's had some high speed and spirited racing in the morning. At lunch time the wind dropped so we all swapped to A+ Rigs (except Bob, who had to leave).
We had 12 races in the morning with the B Rigs

Sailing Results Tuesday the 18th of May 2021
Hiya Sailors,
Firstly... Reminder - next Saturday AGM at lunch break.
IOMs preferred over Df95s if U have both. 😃
Today's sailing started with the lightest of southerlys which allowed sailing to commence after a 1/2 hr delay, std Olympic all buoys to stbd.
Just before lunch the wind dropped then swung 180° then 90° so we called an early lunch to allow it to settle on a NW at a nice 7-8knots steady, this required a course reset to a NW Arrow head...
Mark M was giving a replacement kit boat a run as his old boat was beginning it's death throes at home with splitting keel etc.
He managed two 1sts to break the drought as he sorted the tune, a lost screw on the vang only hampering his Down wind speed but still able to get back to scratch on race 9 & 10.
A special mention for Steve Y for winning the first race then sitting on plus 20secs until managing 3rd in race 9 moving him up to +40... This then allowed Chris L to finish ahead of Steve in the last race so then on a countback gave Chris the advantage. See results...

Worst h'cap -45secs but they managed a podium in the next race. 😁

Again very close racing as the results show, another great day "messin' 'bout with boats"
Cheers

Soling Handicap Results Tuesday the 11thy of May 2021
Short story this week...
Well you had to be there... The outgoing current proved a headache as all boats had trouble making headway to the top mark with the light breeze, needless to say carnage ensued as boats on port tack drifted sideways faster than going forward before the mass collisions and then drifting away with no control - took a lot of boats 25m away before trying again... And again... And again. 😂

Again, very close racing with the first seven boats covering 7pts... Must mean the handicapping is working well. May have been even closer if 231 didn't have the forestay swivel fail and 6's battery go flat at the start of the last race. oh well there is next week.
Sat is mixed fleet handicap with DF95 preferred over IOMs for those who have both, so bring wot U got an⚓or a⛵.
Cheers
Dave

Shoalhaven Heads DF 95 Race results Friday 14 May 2021
A very exiting day of racing in sunshine but cold and strong westerly -north westerly winds. All set up with ‘B’Rigs, for which it was ideal conditions except when the wind waves built up.
Rus set a great course with an upwind gate… quite a long way up the river! Two laps and around the duck to finish. This led to great tacking duals and tactics.
After lunch the wind was veering about 20-30 degrees at times to the NW. This was a great advantage if you could pick the change early or just luck out! In one notable race Tim rounded the duck close to last… and headed to the top gate as the wind veered. Holding the one tack, he rounded the upwind gate as the wind backed to the west! The rest of the fleet was caught out wide as Tim went from last to first! Good tactics Tim!
22 races, handicapped, with 4 drops produced a very close finish. Dave dominated early with 4 wins in the first 10 races, but Tim is known for his consistency and came through later. Russel swapped to A rig and used the advantage downwind. Upwind he was still a little overpowered but still managed to get the win.
Great days sailing for all. Thanks to Tim for picking up the markers.

St Georges Basin NSW Australia

Hi Ladies and Gents
A lovely Autumn day but a frustrating wind, or lack there of. Eventually got going with a light NW which fortunately gained strength during the day. The interesting thing was the current. The level of the basin was up due to the rain and a strong current was running to the WNW. However at some point during the racing it stopped and then reversed running to the SE. Weird. Could be a potential thesis for some bright student doing a Ph D in hydrodynamics of a coastal lake.

BRYC Sailing Report Tuesday the 4th of May 2021
Tony came down to the the bay
To be sociable and say g'day
In his back he pulled a muscle
Unloading wood was a tussle
I'll leave you guys now, I can't stay

Don's boat gave up the ghost
The sails flapped like sheets on a post
He said this is no fun
To fail in race one
It sails like a piece of cold toast.

Malcolm leaned left and right in the rain
To get his boat to go like a train
But try as he might
He wont get to skite
For line honours were just in vain

Chris sailed a bloody good race
For it was Dave P he tried to out pace
In race 2 he came first
Down wind with a burst
Of westerly breeze in his face

Kevin E sailed double O seven
These light winds are just not like heaven
Let's break early for lunch
For I've got a hunch
That my sandwiches are t-sauce and devon

Kevin W was having a fit
This light wind just makes you spit
And to top it all off
The rain's given me a cough
And now my boat's was going like s**t

Ted had his wet weather gear
From head to toe no rain did adhere
But to cover his transmitter
Was a plastic bag, what a s**tter
It's enough to bring a man to a tear.

Dave P sailed his boat like an ace
One, two and three did he place
He used all his tricks
To get his score to just six
Now we cant wipe the smile from his face

And now Dave P's proper report

Hi keen sailors,
Eight skippers with boats & 1 without turned up to the grey overcast skies.
We delayed to await the consensus "do we sail?".. finally yes... no rain yet, so a course was set for the light westerly that changed to a NW breeze whilst getting the boats ready requiring a course reset and the dreaded additional middle buoy. 😉
The start was positioned near the wharf for those of multi, fixed and poor vision then to the middle buoy which was always taken to port (@ the start and finish only) before then travelling to the bottom mark beginning the std Olympic, triangle, return, triangle with last wing mark to the middle buoy with a downwind finish... all became clear as the racing progressed.
1st rescue was for #16 as his receiver came unplugged at the top mark, 1st leg of the 1st race.
Sorted... we managed 3 races before the breeze disappeared calling for an early lunch... then the drizzle started so we called it quits.
Race 1 scratch
#6 started from the port side, although the starboard end was favoured but found the breeze out there allowing for plenty of momentum to go behind the fleet and sail into the lead covering the fleet to the middle mark and led the way.
Handicaps of +20secs applied to 1st 3 finishers, middle 2 stayed on scratch and last 3 -15secs.
Race 2
#231 managed to hold the lead from his scratch start, but the 3 +20sec boats #6, #007 & #14 worked their through the fleet to nearly catch #23.
Race 3
This race was made a bit trickier with a fluctuating breeze and the running current catching a few out, but the top 3 craft managed to again work their way through the fleet finishing strongly.
The craft were all travelling very fast as the apparent wind had all the telltales flowing constantly...
Well not really... damp sails... 😆
Just made it harder to detect what the sails were doing.

Results with xtra statistics 😎 starting h'caps for the 4th race, if it had proceeded.

Results 3 races No drops

1st #6 Dave P 6pts final h'cap +60secs
2nd #231 Chris L 10pts final h'cap +20secs
3rd #007 Kevin E 11pts final hcap +40secs
4th #19 Tom P 12pts final h'cap +5secs
5th #14 Malcom G 13pts final h'cap +5secs
6th #180 Kevin W 17pts final h'cap -10secs
7th #03 Ted M 19pts final h'cap -30secs
8th #16 Don P 21pts final h'cap -45secs
Again very close racing with a mistake costing you dearly.
Cheers
Dave
