Today marked a great milestone. I had a client tick over a decade of training with me. Incredibly, that was my seventh client to achieve the feat! For any trainers out there, you might be able to understand how incredible and difficult that achievement really is. And now, as I share my passion with other aspiring trainers. I had the opportunity to sit down and reflect on some of the values that gave me the chance to achieve this moment.
Being a personal trainer involves more than just guiding workouts; it also requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability to various client needs, and continuous education to stay updated in the fitness industry. Additionally, building a client base and managing the business aspects of being a personal trainer can be challenging.
Strong interpersonal skills. If this isn’t you, pack it up and try again. You must be able to relate to and understand people’s relationships, whilst being able to convey your points and communicate effectively. You will see plenty of examples throughout your day, especially in the intolerant world we live in today. This doesn’t mean you’re a kiss ass. Just understand the time when you need to push your knowledge/agenda and the times when you need to shut up and listen.
You’ve gotta be adaptive. In my own ‘bias’ opinion, I have the best job in the world. When you strip it all back, I get paid to punish and “torture” individuals (for their own benefit, of course). 😂 I’m very privileged that people see the value in me, so be sure to go above and beyond. I have travelled hours to conduct sessions, organised online sessions at obscure times to accommodate for different time zones, joined in countless training sessions just because I know that client needs someone to experience the pain they are feeling. It’s those moments that build stronger connections.
The learning never stops. Fitness is never short of a trend and with the amount of information you can obtain at the click of a button, whether it’s true or not, can be frightening.
