🏊‍♂️ What turns a swimming set into effective training?

It is not only the distance or number of repetitions. Intensity, recovery, stroke, task, and the swimmer’s needs all shape the training stimulus.

In Part 3 of our Swim Session Framework, we explore the set as the point where a session goal becomes practical, purposeful work in the pool.

A swim workout is not automatically a training prescription. 🏊‍♂️📋

In Part 2 of our Swim Session Framework, we look at what gives a swimming session real coaching meaning: the swimmer, the plan, the goals, the expected outcomes, the ex*****on, and the review.

The same written set can mean very different things for different swimmers. It depends on who the swimmer is, where the session sits in the training plan, and what the coach is trying to develop.

Inside the article, we cover:

💡 Why training content is not the same as training prescription
💡 The 5 context questions every session should answer
💡 How session goals connect to set goals
💡 Why every training set needs a clear physical goal or intended stimulus
💡 Why better session records matter for coaches, swimmers, parents, and future AI tools

If you are a swimmer, parent, teacher, or coach, this article helps explain why a good session is more than repeats, distances, strokes, and times.

It is about connecting the work to the swimmer, the goal, and the next decision.

Why do almost all swim sessions look like this: Warm-up → Main → Cool-down?

It isn’t just tradition. Our new article traces the roots of this three-part structure back to education (yep—classroom lesson design!) and shows how it still helps swimmers of all levels train with purpose, protect technique, and recover better.

This is Part 1 of our Swim Session Framework series. Inside, we cover:

📌 Where the 3-part session came from

📌 How do different books/coaches label the middle (the Main part)

📌 Why keeping Parts → Sets → Repeats separate makes every plan clearer

Whether you’re a swimmer, parent, or coach, this gives your sets a solid home—and makes great ideas easier to share.

A question for the entire swimming community: Is our obsession with the pace clock holding our athletes back?

As we get excited for the World Aquatics Championships 2025 in Singapore, the pressure is on. But what if the biggest hurdle for many swimmers isn't the competition, but a hidden flaw in our daily training methods?

We just published a deep-dive into the science of rest, explaining how a simple logistical shortcut taken decades ago still contributes to athlete burnout and plateaus today. We believe this is a critical conversation for the future of our sport.

🏊‍♀️ Elite Butterfly Technique: Hidden Edge or Missed Opportunity?

We observed something intriguing while analysing butterfly stroke patterns at the world-class level—a unique approach that’s rare at such an elite stage.

The observation? The second kick—a key component of butterfly propulsion, balance, and efficiency—appears minimised or absent for one of these athletes. At this level, it’s uncommon, as the second kick typically supports stroke rhythm, power output, and sustained forward velocity.

We’ve compiled a short video featuring underwater footage from different events. Can you spot the same pattern in the video?

This raises some thought-provoking questions:

❓ Could this be a purposeful adaptation? Perhaps the technique is optimised for the athlete’s unique morpho-functional characteristics, conserving energy or improving efficiency in specific race scenarios.

❓Or could it be an overlooked opportunity? Developing this aspect of the stroke might unlock measurable gains across distances ranging from the 50m to the 200m butterfly.

This observation reminded us of other innovative approaches to technique that disrupted norms and transformed performance:

🚀 Dolphin Kick in Breaststroke Turns: A well-timed dolphin kick during the pullout phase added significant power and speed.

🚀Underwater Dolphin Kick in Freestyle: This "fifth stroke" maximised speed during starts and turns before surfacing.

🚀Straight-Arm Freestyle Recovery: Increased momentum and speed, particularly in sprint events, compared to the traditional bent-arm recovery.

🚀Wave Breaststroke: An undulating motion improved efficiency and power through smoother transitions between stroke phases.

Whether this represents an opportunity for refinement or a brilliant adaptation, it’s a reminder that swimming, even at the highest levels, is a constant journey of discovery and growth.
