The first edition of the $109,000 Ladbrokes.com.au Carpet Charge was a huge success in 2023, and the second instalment of the race promises to be just as big a hit on Wednesday’s Devonport Cup program.
The Carpet Charge is the first leg of the 2024 Ladbrokes Community Sports Series (LCSS), which offers up $76,000 in cash prizes to sporting clubs across the state.
The series has been expanded in 2024 to incorporate the Hobart and Launceston Cup Days, following the success of the Carpet Charge in 2023.
On Sunday afternoon, at the Devonport Racing Club, the sporting clubs draw to allocate each horse to a club took place, setting the scene for an exciting build-up to Wednesday’s race.
The Cuprona Football Club were fortunate enough to draw the Carpet Charge early race favourite, Bello Beau, and with $10,000 going to the club that draws the winning horse, it’s fair to say they were pleased with the outcome.
“Our clubrooms burnt down a few years ago, so if we were lucky enough to win the $10,000, it would be enormous for us,” said Cuprona Football Club Secretary Matt Turner following Sunday’s draw.
The Barry Campbell-trained Emily finished second to Turk Warrior in the 2023 Carpet Charge, and it was the Spreyton Football Club who drew the 5YO mare and will be cheering loudly for her to go one better in 2024.
The club is only a few kilometres from the Spreyton racecourse, and after struggling for survival in recent times, they’ll be there in force on Wednesday afternoon.
“We’re very excited to have drawn Emily,” said club spokesperson Jodie Turner.
“I’ll be making sure to get us all out here on race day.”
Over 30 north west sporting clubs entered the draw to be allocated a horse for the 2024 Ladbrokes Carpet Charge, with $10,000 going to the winner, $5,000 to second and $3,000 to third.
The addition of the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge has not only added another quality race to the Devonport Cup Day program, but involving community clubs has brought a wave of new racing fans to the course on Cup Day, where each club will be represented.
