HERO OF THE WEEK 🙌🏻 Jenny, 51, Central Coast 🏃🏼‍♀️

“I started running 10 years ago, when the last of my 4 children started school. What started as a weight loss journey became a passion. I discovered a whole world, my first 10km event, parkrun, half marathons, trail running, ultra marathons and run clubs. Running has opened up so many opportunities. I have met some amazing people and travelled to some incredible places.

My biggest challenge is my pace. I am a self confessed “slow runner” but this word seems to be frowned upon by many so I generally choose to call myself a “back of the pack runner”. It bothers me a little, especially with tight cutoff times in events I would love to do but I changed my thinking to “celebrate what I can do and not stress about what I can’t”. Every run is a blessing and brings me joy in some way.

My most memorable running experience would have to be my 3rd 50km run – Ultra Trail Koscuisko in December 2022. My race entry was gifted to me for my 50th birthday, I had trained well and lined up ready!!! I did the 50km, under my goal time of 10 hours, the most exciting bit was that it was snowing on the start line, in fact it snowed on us for the first 10km.

Running is so much more than a form of exercise, it is a journey, a community, a quiet space, a happy place. Running can test our limits and showcase our abilities. Running can simply bring peace and calm into our lives. My joy in running comes from not only my own running journey but from following other people on their running journey.”
