Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Weekend Competition
The competition last Saturday was the annual Legacy Day, which attracted a strong field of 125 starters and raised $1500 for Grafton Legacy Legacy Australia. The overall winner and Legacy Cup winner on the day was Karl Studd (15), who put together a rather impressive score of 41 points and obviously would have got his playing partners cash as a bonus. Claiming the remaining feature trophy for the day, The Diggers Cup, was Greg McCoughey (24) who accumulated a total of 29 points. Greg had a tough start to his round scoring just 10 points on the front 9, however it was a strong performance around the back 9 which secured the trophy for him, scoring 19 to bolster his overall score. In Division one, Simon Loadsman (3) finished on top with 40 from Graham Tracey (8) with 39. Shane Essex (13) also with a score of 40 was the leading golfer in Division two 2 clear of runner-up Kieran Walsh (18) with 38 against his name. Just the single point separated the leading two players in Division three with Brody Robertson (23)winning that grade with 36 from Bruce Baxter (20) on 35. The sharp shooters were out in force regarding the nearest the pin awards on the day with all four awards 50cm or less. On the 1st it was Robert Usher (21) who claimed the Pro pin his tee shot 31cm from the cup. On the 6th Brad Deece (9) claimed the prize, his tee shot 30cm from the cup. Glenn Jackson (18) was the star on the 10th just 20cm from the pin. On the 17th Graham Tracey (8) got the cash, his tee shot 50cm away. There were 30 pro balls available for distribution, and you needed a score of at least 33 to secure one.
Mid-week Competition
The field in Tuesday’s Members/Veterans competition was substantially less than normal, with overnight and early morning rain resulting in many players scratching from the event. However, a total of 65 players took up the challenge with the playing conditions improving as the day went on. The field included 59 Veterans, with the results in both the Veteran and Member divisions identical. Two players, Terry Sampson (8) and Brad Mostyn (9) shared the top spot on the leader board with 38 points, with Terry declared the winner following the countback. 2nd runner-up spot was awarded to Robert Usher (21) with 36 on a countback from Ian Walters (19) and Tim Newsome (22). The “all in” nearest the pin awards went to Mick Craw (1) on the 6th and Mark Hackett (9) the 10th. The Veteran awards went to Brad Mostyn (9) on the 1st, Mick Craw (1) the 17th, Terry Sampson (8) the 4th with Mick Craw (1) picking up his 3rd pin trophy on the day on the 14th. Pro balls going down to 31 for the Veterans and 30 in the members division.
Thursday’s Tallowood Challenge competition was well patronised with 55 starters taking on the challenge. Wayne Creighton (13) was the clear winner on the day with a nett score of 72. Wayne was followed by two players with 73, Anthony Cavanagh (9) and Jim Packwood (22) who were recognised as the 1st and 2nd runner-up winners, respectively. The nearest the pin awards went to Scott Acton (16) on the 1st, Mick Carter 6) the 6th, Jim O’Donohue (9) the 10th and Mark Hackett (9) claiming the 17th. Pro balls went down to 78 on a countback.
Coming events
The Saturday event this week will be the Johnno & Dianna Johnson Memorial Day, which will take the form of a 4-man Ambrose. For those Grafton members who may not be aware of Johnno’s contribution to the Grafton Golf Club history, Johnno was Club President for several years as well as being a Board Member on top of that involvement. Johnno’s contribution formally recognised with Life Membership. No one can contribute as much as that without the support of family and Dianna’s support cannot ever be questioned. Long time family friend, Bruce Wotton is continuing his support of this important event, which is very much appreciated. The main playing condition relating to this competition is that each team member must contribute a drive on a par 3, 4 and 5.
