Had some nice young lads drop past at 11.37pm Saturday night, picked up some tubs and the trolley from near the rooms. Driving a white Mazda 6 station wagon, number plates not belonging to vehicle XOS 477. The driver had a bad limp on his right leg.

In The Courier article it mentions that the change room project that has been advocated of over 7 years wasn’t again funded in this years state budget. When you look at the investment at Rokewood and Linton, you get the feeling that Skipton is being punished for some reason. We have all met with our local State member, who encourages us to apply for grants, yet we tend to miss out also.

The Council funded wifi was installed today (part of disaster recovery project from last year) it can be accessed by anyone at the Rec where the signal will go. In a disaster the signal can be boosted so that emergency services can set up at the Rec.

Fire on Friday 9th January 2026. There has been some information coming back from Skipton Recreation Reserve and Skipton FNC volunteers regarding the club room facility at Smythe Street Skipton. The text message received by town people at around 2.40pm was to evacuate to Beaufort.
The Rec Reserve Committee manage the reserve on behalf of DEECA (State Government) and the Corangamite Council, We are advised when to open or not open the reserve in an emergency situation. The club rooms were not opened as the venue is not an adequate fire shelter; it is a colour bond and timber building and the “Neighbourhood safer place” in the grass in the middle of the oval.
The volunteers that were contacted on the day for a key are still upset by continuous griping that the Skipton FNC and Rec Reserve committee, had abandoned the people that chose to muster and break in at the Rec Reserve.
If you have any issues regarding the “Neighbourhood safer place” and if your emergency fire plan is that you are only able to make it to the Rec Reserve, you need to talk with Corangamite Council. Your local councillor Cr Nick Cole has been at the “recovery hub” at the Hall since the fire event, our mayor Cr Kate Makin has been made aware of the issue, and the council will work with people that are unable to drive, or have relatives that can help. They intend to set up a vulnerable persons list for those that need help in an evacuation event. Please make sure you speak with the Council ASAP.
I thank the volunteers that help out at our reserve, the Skipton FNC volunteers that look after the club rooms and open the bar for meals and drinks do this as a community service. On behalf of the Skipton Recreation Reserve Committee of Management (SRR) we thank all the people involved in the recent oval surface rebuild. We thank the town folk that have had to put up with the sand and dust from the earthworks and the unfortunate wind in late January which moved some of the newly laid topsoil.

Since the start of October 2024 the SRR committee of management have completely renovated the surface of the Skipton Oval, what was supposed to be levelling off and bringing in 450 cubic metres of soil, turned out to be a much larger scope, where the project required over 2000 cubic metres of soil. We had hoped that we could use soil that was donated from various generous farmers locally, but when it came to the quality, the soil fell short.

We were thankful to secure the screened topsoil from a local sand and soil supplier, who was very generous with the pricing and also donated some soil to the project.

We raised $31,500 from contributions locally towards the project, (special thanks to the Skipton Community Shop, Skipton Progress Association and various anonymous donors for supporting the project,) this figure does not include the in kind time, equipment and labour involved in the oval renovation.

This figure is well over $100,000 when you put in the near 100’s of hours free labour that John Peeters and other generous donors have contributed. I’m sure the footballers will appreciate the effort that the committee and the wider community have worked hard to achieve.

WORKING BEE CANCELED DUE TO PRACTICE MATCHES

Hi everyone, how good is the oval looking? Well done JP for the hundreds of hours he has put in, to make this a reality.

Working bee, next Saturday the 15th March from 8am. Need to do some whipper snipping around the oval, pressure wash out front of the change rooms/pavillion.

Goal posts need to be re-installed, carpet turf to be laid infront of Skipton coaches box. Please contact John on 0407 041 504 to see what you need to bring.

I received a message from the Corangamite council tonight, there were a few people staying at the Skipton Recreation Reserve and the change rooms have been opened for the use of the showers. I was messaged again tonight by Belinda at the council who will decide tomorrow whether they will have a relief centre located at the Skipton Recreation Reserve.

Working bee at the Skipton Oval this Saturday morning, 9am. We have a few small rocks that have come in with the topsoil that was brought in last week. The surface has been rolled, and could you bring a bucket and some willing participants. Thanks
