With only a month to go till the great race accross the unforgiving, unpredictable Bass Straight to the Scallop Pie capital of Australia, there is maxi boat teams engaging in wallet jousting events up and down the eastern Aussie coastline in an attempt to be first to the pie shop!

With the notable absence of the past controversal record breaking goon bag for this year's race, a secret sunfish breeding program has been discovered off the southern NSW coast, which has sent shivers up the spine of a super maxi about to be relaunched just north of the border!

These monsters of the deep show their presence every few years, breaking appendages and notably repeatably singling out a Victorian super maxi in the past to the extent of ripping its keel clean off on one occasion, in reportably an un provoked attack from these silent moist assassins!

The massive 2 handed fleet that is assembling have been warned to keep vigilant, whilst not travelling anywhere near the speed of their high dollar Maxi competitors, they have been asked to not get distracted by any war movies till they reach the safety of the Derwent River!

Who or what is responsible for these mass numbers of menacing schools off Bermagui?

Rest assured, Growing trees has its finger in the pie on the ground to bring any updates that come to hand!

Growing Trees, being at the forefront of Australian yachting news, has tracked down the "alleged" culprit causing this years provisional Hobart race line honours winner Wild Oats's glitch in the workings of the maxi yachts AIS tracking system! It is rumored Wild Oats has employed the same Sunfish, which has wreaked havoc to many a maxi yacht competing in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in past years! While normally involved with the damaging of underwater appendages on these highly tuned racing machines, this year it is alleged to have been stepped up a notch, removing the equipment off the yachts masthead, rendering it invisible to other competitors, and to the many armchair experts at home following closely!

1pm Hobart time, the involved parties will be getting together over a latte and slice of scallop pie, chest pumping will be heard, maybe even wallets waved in anger, and there will be a ruling one way or another!

Don't throw your betting receipts out just yet!!!

This Saturday, January 20 2018, exactly 5 years since some of Australia's finest Drain Racers contested the last installment of the Intergalactic Elliot 7 drain racing championships in the tropical paradise of southeast Queensland!!!!

That year saw the old, and some even older hands on the Mighty Barney Army, Andrew Carmen Barney, Timmy, Ian Miller and Jason 'Goggles' Ruckert first tease, then overtake and demoralise the fully paid pro team assembled on Daniel Jacks Me Off of Andrew Triggell, Gary Van Lunteren and Ando!

This year has 5 E7's going for the Intergaltic drain racing championship! The fully class optimised boats of the Barney Army, Ghost Rider, Elvish and steeple jack, with their square top mains developed by some of the Americas cups best sailmakers, and the new commer Geronimo still sporting a pintop sailplans sewn together in the late 90's!

So who will win, its too close to call at the moment, even the pros at Ladbrokes are holding out till Saturday morning to see latest gossip, hangoverness before the world can place their money down on this massive event!

So many of the crew from 5 years ago are gracing themselves onboard the 5 high performance Drain Racers, could the new comers conquer over the unbeatable Barney Army, or will the Easy Riders and their professional outfit give them a run, or will Chris O'Shannessy's wildcard Geronimo gracing the oldest forwardhand trail these professionals in as expected!!!!! Saturday morning will answer all these questions, and more!!!

One thing is for sure, there will be laughs, hydration, deep fried snacks, encouragement of our catwacker mates, tears and stories to keep all competitors going for the next 5 years!

Surf to City Yacht Race,

Now the dust has settled, and the bag is now empty, dock rumors are rife that Wild Oats will be seeking a new helmsman for next years parade south!!! For us at Growing Trees, this guy has the inside running! He completed the course this year in a boat 90 foot shorter, with a motor running the whole way, just like the Oats!

If thats not enough, he is allready dressed for the occasion!!!!

Nathan you got this!!!

Nathan Rykers tackled 40-foot waves in Bass Strait in a boat most of us wouldn’t go fishing in.
