Ever notice the players who quietly set the standard at your local baseball club? âšľ

They’re not always captains or coaches, but their presence matters. From mentoring juniors to showing up consistently, these senior players build the culture that keeps clubs strong — for the long game.

Returning players often feel pressure to jump straight into coaching, but sometimes the most valuable role is simply showing up, helping where needed, and setting an example. The impact is bigger than any trophy — it’s about creating a culture that lasts.

đź’ˇ Takeaway: Every presence on the field counts. Mentorship comes in many forms, and the next generation is always watching.

Preseason preparation isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing the right things, consistently.

Every year, new players move through the ranks, watching how seniors prepare, train, and carry themselves. Whether we realise it or not, we’re setting the standard.

This article breaks down a practical, realistic approach to preseason for players heading into winter ball — focused on intention, preparation, and playing the long game.

⚾ Starting out strong! I’ve just published my first article at The Long Game Project: Understanding the Challenges in Community Sports Clubs.

I didn’t start The Long Game Project because I had a big idea.
I started it because I’ve seen too many good people slowly disappear from community sport.

I didn’t start The Long Game Project because I wanted to launch something new.
I started it because I’ve spent enough time around community sport to see a pattern that keeps repeating.

The same people show up early.
Stay late.
Take on one extra role “just for this season”.

Not because they’re asked to — but because if they don’t, things don’t get done.
Over time, that responsibility quietly builds. And eventually, good people don’t burn out in a big dramatic way — they just stop putting their hand up.
The Long Game Project is about talking honestly about that reality. Not blaming volunteers or committees, but looking at the systems that rely on goodwill instead of sustainability.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re carrying more than most people realise, this project is for you.

No quick fixes.

Just a better way forward.
