From Shepparton to the USA, Thomas Ranson Takes the Next Step!
Reaching a high level in tennis takes dedication, discipline and years of consistent effort, and Thomas is a great example of what’s possible.
Thomas started right here at our club, learning the game, developing his skills, and being supported by senior local players and his first coach Luke Dixon.
At just 15, Thomas made the move to boarding school in Melbourne to access stronger training and competition opportunities. Balancing school and sport required organisation, commitment and a clear focus on his goals.
Training up to six days a week, his journey has included:
• Private lessons
• Multiple squad sessions
• Extensive match play
• Strength and conditioning to stay fit and healthy
• Building a strong and resilient mindset
A significant part of his journey has been the support he received while at Caulfield Grammar and his scholarship with the , providing a high quality training base and the opportunity to train at and represent Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.
Just as important has been the unwavering support of his family. Paul, Karen and Zach have shown tremendous commitment throughout Thomas’s tennis journey, making countless sacrifices and providing encouragement every step of the way. From training sessions and tournaments to travel and the everyday demands of pursuing high level tennis, their support over many years has played a vital role in helping Thomas achieve his goals.
Travel has also been a key part of his development, helping prepare him for the demands of competitive tennis.
For young players thinking about college tennis, it’s important to understand the pathway early. From around Year 8, both your tennis and academic results and subject choices matter when it comes to opportunities in the US system.
During the recruitment process, Thomas spoke with several universities but quickly built a strong connection with Head Coach, Mikus Losbergs at Sacramento State.
This August, Thomas will head to the USA to begin an exciting new chapter, joining Sacramento State, California in the NCAA Division 1 Big West Conference, where he’ll study Sports Science and continue developing his tennis.
🏆 Some highlights from Thomas’ journey so far include:
• 2025 Australian Nationals 18U Doubles – Winner
• 2024 Australian Nationals 18U Doubles – Finalist
• 2025 Victorian Grade 1 Pennant (Kooyong) – Winner
• Victorian State Team 18U (2024 & 2025)
• Caulfield Grammar School Team Captain – APS Champions (2025)
• All APS Representative Team Captain (2025)
Thomas’ story is a reminder that success isn’t about one single factor, it’s the result of consistent effort across many areas, over time. Just as importantly, it’s about enjoying the game and not measuring self worth by results alone.
College tennis isn’t the destination; it’s part of the journey. We can’t wait to see what’s ahead for Thomas as he takes his game to the next level.
👏 Congratulations Thomas, we're all behind you, cheering you on!
