The opportunity to hunt a chital deer doesn’t come around very often, so when the chance presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up. Known for their striking spotted coats and elusive nature, chital deer have become one of my favourite species to hunt.

We headed out early, slowly picking apart the country in the hope of spotting one. I spent hours behind my ZEISS Victory RF 8x42 binoculars, carefully glassing every open patch and shaded timber line. As the morning wore on, it began to feel like it just wasn’t going to happen.

Then, in an instant, everything changed.

A lone chital stag appeared, but he wasn’t planning on hanging around. There was no time to waste. I settled in behind my Christensen Arms Ridgeline Bronze Edition chambered in .300 Win Mag, loaded with Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition. I squeezed the trigger, and the shot was true. The stag dropped on the spot, bringing an unforgettable hunt to a successful end.

Walking up to him, I couldn’t help but admire just how beautiful these deer are. His exceptional spotted hide was everything I’d hoped for and something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. Opportunities like this are rare, and being able to harvest such an incredible animal made the experience one I’ll never forget.

I loved being right amongst the action, experiencing the rusa rut at its absolute peak. With plenty of mature rusa stags chasing and guarding hinds, there was never a dull moment. The open plains were alive with activity, making for an action-packed hunting experience and a true reminder of why the rusa rut is one of the most exciting times of the year to be in the bush.

I recently had the opportunity to head away for a few days with a great group of mates to hunt rusa deer. With the rusa rut in full swing, the timing couldn't have been better, and we were lucky enough to experience the best part of the season with plenty of mature stags moving around.
Using my ZEISS Victory RF 8x42 binoculars, I spent hours behind the glass, taking in the scenery while carefully watching the stags in the distance. After spotting a few quality animals, we set off on the pursuit.
Not long into the hunt, I found a mature rusa stag bedded in a patch of prickly acacia amongst a group of hinds. Patiently waiting for him to stand and move into a clearer opening, I quickly realised he was something special. I settled in behind my Christensen Arms Bronze Edition chambered in .300 Win Mag and trusted the Hornady Precision Hunter 178-grain ammunition to do its job. At the shot, the stag dropped where he stood.
Walking up to him was a moment I'll never forget. He had already impressed me through the binoculars, but up close he far exceeded my expectations. He measured an incredible 38.25 inches in length and scored just over 240 Douglas points, making him an exceptional trophy.
It's an experience and a memory I'll treasure forever. Hunts like these are about far more than the trophy—they're about the adventure, the mateship, the country, and the privilege of pursuing such an incredible animal. This magnificent rusa stag will proudly hang on my wall for many years to come as a reminder of an unforgettable hunt.

A successful hunt is when everything comes together. The stags were roaring, and the wind was in my favor — perfect conditions for the pursuit. Using my Zeiss Victory RF 8x42 binoculars, I glassed the distance and spotted the does feeding, waiting patiently until I located the stag after he let out a roar.

I made my way down the hill, pursuing carefully with my Christensen Arms .300 Win Mag Bronze Edition close by and ready to take the shot. Once I moved into a comfortable shooting distance, I leaned against a Moreton Bay Ash tree to steady myself and took the shot. The Hornady Precision Hunter 178gr ELD-X performed flawlessly, and the red stag dropped where he stood.

In the end, I came away with a great 5x5 red stag trophy and plenty of free-range venison to fill the freezer — a rewarding result from a hunt where everything went to plan. 🦌🌿

Heading out into the wilderness to harvest free-range, organic venison is an experience like no other. I love everything it has to offer — the hunt, the preparation, and the cooking process. Nothing brings greater satisfaction than doing it yourself and putting food on the table through your own hard work.

On this hunt, I used my Christensen Arms .300 Win Mag Bronze Edition, loaded with Hornady Precision Hunter 178-grain ammunition, and relied on my Zeiss Victory RF 8x42 binoculars to glass the terrain.
