Selby Slammers Basketball

Selby Slammers Basketball After a long hiatus, the Slammers return to the court in the 2014 Pro-Pac Section 8 Super League! We'll find out in 2014.

Apart from the 1994 closure of it's historic Post Office, nothing hit the small town of Selby harder than the demise of the Slammers. Under the unique guidance of GM Hamish Swami and assistant GM Adam Parker, can they return to the top of basketball? Will they, for the first time in club history, actually have someone who can 'slam' dunk? And what does ' ' even mean?

They're bloody big in a league where small-ball generally prevails

Pit Lane's Assessment - So it appears Selby are favourites to win their first S8SL Championship. You couldn't wipe the smile off Hamish Swami's face, but they're yet to play a game and anything is possible. Picture this - Justin Aver is out because he's taking his multiple dogs to puppy school. When Michael Bruce steps out of the rotation for a hard-earned spell they go...

What the hell is that!?

The roster balance is a big concern for mine. To add fuel to the fire, Hamish Swami contacted his third pick Matt Leigh the other day to let him know he's a Slammer. The response - "oh that's right, I forgot I commit to a Wednesday night basketball league many months ago. Yeh about that, I've actually decided to go to night school and study to become a gardener and it happens to be every single Wednesday night for the remainder of the season - so I'm out." Bloody hell, another typical Selby season on the cards in 2019.

With less than one week until draft night for the 2019 season, GM Swami is very active in trading picks and is wheelin and dealin his way to two picks in the top ten!

Will we see any familiar faces in green or will it be an all new look for the Selby squad?

Selby slam Spartans!

The selby slammers have won their first final of the season beating the st thomas more Spartans by 2 points!

One hell of a game for all involved, with both teams holding leads of double figures at stages.

A credit to the Boys in green for grinding it out and never quitting. Hammy and Runch solid, gibson, hagg, bibby played their roles perfectly.

Crotty was elite banking triples from everywhere and finishing 100% from the field. His ability to shoot with the filthiest tradie hands in the world is something of beauty!

Next week we play Belgrave with a chance to earn a week off and enter a conference final! Now is the time to get around us, the slammers 🚂 is gaining momentum so all aboard!!!

It’s been a good month for the Green!

Selby boys have been playing some good basketball and even Selby veteran and ex assistant GM Adam “clagger” Parker got a call up and a win!

This week we took on the St Thomas More’s Spartans and I’m going to test how many people actually read these and how far down you will read. The weather overnight in Melbourne got to a low of 5 degrees which felt like 3 and there has been no rain since 9am.

Selby made it rain last night shooting above 40% from the field. But we are not getting carried away. Everyone played their role and we are just taking it week by week. The boys are not getting ahead of themselves and playing within their structures. If I use one more cliche I think I’m going to be sick. Here is a picture of Casey Marshall, Josh West and Chris Payne who attended The Footy Show to celebrate Payneys bday.

It is official fans the King is on the market....rumour mill has it Selby are the front runners for his signature!

“I’ve always had an appreciation for GM Hamish Swami and the Slammers Organisation.” Lebron was quoted earlier in the year.

Could this be a new era in the lime green? Stay tuned.......

Selby slammers string together wins!

The boys in green have given out another HAMmering last night against the much uglier dull green that is the Tecoma raptors.

All 7 players attended and contributed to the win and the self proclaimed 8th player GM HAMish Swami believes he was the one who provided the winning touch.

“I called a time out when our lead fell from 10 to just 4. I knew that the clock would keep running and that Hammy would have a chance to discuss mortgage options with both referees and half of the Tecoma bench. Im better than Bert Van. I’m a genius” - GM Swami

Selby grind out a tough 3 point win and take second place on the ladder. The win highlighted by 4 of the 5 starters getting double digits in points. Versatile!

Speaking of a versatile genius did I mention Loan Market have a new gun recruit for all your mortgage and re financing needs?! If you let me look at your current finance position and I can’t save you money I will personally give you a home brand ham! That’s HAMazing!

I hope I haven’t given away who writes these.. *head wobbles off into the sunset*

Selby slammers match review:

Vs Kallista Comets ft Corey Standefer

Result: victory

The boys knew they had a tough but winnable game ahead of them and as far as this season goes it was a must win. A few of the boys were caught smiling when free agent Corey was left warming up in his slides because Kallista didn’t have a uniform spare for the big fella.

The game started with him on the bench so we knew we had to start well. The game started slowly for both sides with most players struggling to find range from anywhere including a few air balls for both teams.

This was until Nathan Truman (kallista) started whacking triples and throwing down the gauntlet to his defender Casey Marshall. Casey not to be out done decided he would start shooting and making trifectas in the face of Truman and a mini rivalry emerged.

The game was close throughout but Selby managed to retain the lead through some beautiful basketball from the highly sort after Mexican recruit Juan Crotty. Juan has been great for Selby since his clearance from the Mexico City Cervezas.

Special mention to Mike Runchey who was elite down the stretch for Selby on both ends of the floor and Casey Marshall who shot the lights out and was unbelievable!

Aidan Hudson has been superb for us since coming across from Tecoma and the boys love how easily he has fit in. Tonight was no exception helping share the load of guarding the free agent with Skipper Gibson.

A great culture and team atmosphere is growing at Selby and the boys are starting to form a worrying side for the rest of the league!

GM Swami didn’t pay for the team sheet this week so he is on the block. All inquiries to be forwarded to C.Haag

Attention Selby slammers and slammettes! Game time tonight is 9pm at Nunawading stadium.

Full squad for the green taking on Saint Tom and his Spartans.

Where else would you want to be on a cold wintery night than a toasty basketball stadium?
Should be a ripper!

Disclaimer: if we lose we are trading Gibbo for Rick Pearce

31/05/2018

So after last weeks tough loss we made the trade to bring in a bibby for a bobble. Because after loses sometimes you need trades. But what about when you are the 7-0 Belgrave Bandits and your biggest concern for the season so far is Ricky Bobby’s thigh high deep heat routine? Well they love trades also and swapped out kale and whale for flip and hawkesy. More on this later.

The game was fast paced action from the start with all 9 players on the court playing tight man to man defence. Selby had one player constantly left open somehow who kept making the open jumpshot. The Moore open he was the Moore shots he made. Much to the delight of our newest crowd meatball Mario Aprile who has become an honorary slammer in crowd heckling only and will not suit up for the lime greens (even though we think he secretly loved the squad and team dynamic)

Selby at one stage held a commanding 18 point lead and the Bandits needed some support. Unfortunately for them it was the support holding up the backboard that newly acquired Britt hit squarely with his first jump shot from 4 feet away.

All players were contributing with everyone off the bagel early and special mention to Runchey who goes into beast mode when a Moore defends him and also Chris ‘Haggy’ Haag who more then held his own against opponent Rick Pearce who is honestly close to double his size!

We knew Belgrave would attack and start taking the game on and Andy Harmer (ex slammer) was slicing and dicing us with his pace. He didn’t get much help as his team finished with a dismal 16% from the 3. Credit goes to all 7 Selby boys for the defensive effort and GM Swami commended them for their approach. Once he moved his freshly cut fringe to the side with a Fabioesque flick he said “this win is more satisfying than a 2 piece feed when they give you two drumsticks instead of the s**tty wing that’s supposed to come with the deal, I fu***ng hate that dehydrated piece of s**t that’s all crunchy and has next to no meat in it.”

Selby finished the game out strongly and ran away 10 point victors handing Belgrave their first L for the season. In other news the recently traded whale/kale combo had 28 points combined and a record crowd attendance of 26 Ryan family members including aunt Merryl who is down from Mooloolaba.

Great to welcome Bibby to the green and also have the Chico baby himself, Jason Crotty, back who is rocking the darkest legal tint.

Selby moves to 3rd in the conference and has more importantly put some breathing space between itself and the wings and tutus.
