The pool competition season starts this weekend at MSAC, and we wish all competitors the best of luck.
Mackenzie Gibbs is a rising star in swimming, known for her perseverance and passion for pool competitions.
Mackenzie has autism and a disability that affects her hips and ankles, which makes running and balance challenging. She joined the Seaspray SLSC as an under-7 nipper, wanting to stay safe in the surf and be part of a supportive community. She competed with able-bodied athletes until under 10, when her disability made it harder to keep up, but she always stayed committed to lifesaving.
In 2023, Mackenzie tried pool lifesaving at a come-and-try day and quickly found where she belonged. Since then, she has competed at state and national levels, taking part in adaptive lifesaving events, competing at carnivals, state championships, and the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (Aussies).
Along the way, she earned her Surf Rescue Certificate and now patrols at Seaspray Beach.
In 2026, Mackenzie won nine medals, including five gold at Aussies, and over the Easter break, she competed in the Australian Multi Class Age Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast and took home three gold medals.
After a great summer in both pool and beach events, Mackenzie is excited to get back in the water at MSAC this weekend. Good luck to Mackenzie and to all pool lifesaving competitors as the season begins.
