GREAT PERFORMANCE AGAINST THE GREATEST
By Warren Beeby

Orazio Alessi, representing the minnow Seaforth Bowling Club, scored more points than anyone else against Cory Wedlock in the knock-out matches at the Australian Open at Robina yesterday. Wedlock had to win three games to progress to the third round of the Open and the two other players he met couldn’t get as close as Orazio’s 14-21. This followed son Marc’s 16-21 performance against Wedlock the previous Saturday.

The match started in typical Orazio fashion. Cory won the toss and graciously handed the mat to Orazio, who returned the favour by immediately rolling the Jack out of bounds.

After that, he had the Champ perplexed, winning the first five ends for a 6-0 lead.

The greens were fast and true and running at about 16 seconds. It was a good match played in a good spirit. At one point Corey’s Aunty came across and told Orazio how well she thought he was playing. He did bowl well but wasn’t able to keep it up for the whole match. He was happy when he got past the magical 10 shots (below which nobody likes to finish) and then lost a little focus.

The World Number One singles player never faltered. He didn’t bowl a bad shot. In fact, the better Orazio played the more inventive and precise Cory became. Twice Orazio was holding “resting touchers” and Cory came in with delicately weighted shots, spilled the Jack into the open and scored three shots both times. On another end Cory drove the jack out of play and when it was re-spotted on the T, Orazio was down another three.

The match went to 22 ends, and the score card (above) shows Orazio and Wedlock each won 11. Great effort by Orazio. Unfortunately, Cory Wedlock’s 11 ends included four threes.

Orazio was more than happy with himself because he only rolled the Jack out of bounds three times compared with six last Sunday. Jack-rolling lessons can be arranged at Seaforth.

ANOTHER CRACK AT THE WORLD No.1
By Warren Beeby (9/6/26)

Orazio Alessi, believe it or not, has drawn world No.1 lawn bowler Corey Wedlock in the first round of the knock-out section of the Australian Open Singles Championship. The news came through after he had fought his way through the round-robin stage on Sunday, winning two of the three marches against top players.

And that was a day after son Marc Alessi fought Wedlock all the way in the third of his round-robin matches. He gave the champ a scare at 12-14 before going down valiantly, 16-21.

On Saturday, Wedlock asked Marc, “Who’s this Orazio?” Marc replied, “He’s my Dad and he’s better than I am.” It may have been better not said. Wedlock will be ready and waiting when he and Orazio clash in the knock-out on Saturday.

Trouble is, Orazio damaged his back in Sunday’s game and is racing the clock with physiotherapy to be ready for the start of their pairs campaign tomorrow.

Orazio said yesterday, “My back has had enough. I couldn’t get out of bed this morning (yesterday.) I had lower back spasms. We are scheduled to play three pairs games on Wednesday and I’m hoping I won’t let Marc down. Saturday is too far away (to think about) at the moment.”

Chief supporter and sideline tactician, Josh Bartholomeusz, gave him a massage on Sunday, but there’s only so much a real estate agent can do.

SEAFORTH PAIR MAKE THEIR MARC
by Warren Beeby

Orazio Alessi has made it through to the knock-out stage of the Australian Open Bowls Championship, progressing on a count-back after winning two of his three round-robin matches at Broadbeach on Sunday.

He started first game slowly against the highly-rated Warilla hot-shot Robert Hector as he struggled with the fast, sleek Queensland green. He fought hard to keep it competitive, making him work for every shot. Sadly, the loudest applause from the large crowd came when Orazio managed to keep the Jack on the rink when he had
the roll. After the game Orazio said he was just off when it mattered most. He went down 14-21.

Things went well in the next game against Steve Butler from Yamba. Orazio played his usual aggressive game and triumphed 21-14. In the third game, he saw off Alan Law from Robina 21 shots to 5. On the other rink, a sore shoulder was betraying the favourite Robert Hector who succumed 17-21 to Steve Butler.

With Orazio and Hector each having lost one game, it came down to a for-and-against countback to see who would progress to the knock-out stage of the Championship. Orazio came out on top with a +15 margin against Robert Hector’s +10.

On Saturday, son Marc won his first game, lost his second by one shot and came up against the World No 1 in his third game.

Expecting a pushover against a rooky player, Cory Wedlock became very animated at times and vented his frustration when the score stood at 12-14, in a very tough match. When he was out-bowled on one end, Cory frizbeed the mat into the bank. Marc played beautifully, drawing to the jack and and playing weight when his opponent held shots. But experience and talent won through in the end with Cory playing over the top of his young opponent for his inevitable win, 21-16. It was an outstanding result for Marc against the best singles player in the world.

Whatever happens next, Orazio said it was an experience he and Marc would never forget. “It was fantastic watching some of the best bowlers in the sport and competing at such a high level. I’m proud to represent Seaforth into the next stage.” he said.

🏆 Grade 6 Metro North‑East Champions! 🏆

What an incredible weekend for Seaforth Bowling Club as our Grade 6 White team claimed the Open Gender Pennants Grade 6 Metro North‑East Finals, hosted at St Ives Bowling Club.

After a disappointing start on Saturday morning, losing all three rinks to St Ives on their home turf, the team staged a remarkable turnaround — defeating both Newport and Harbord on all three rinks. That effort pushed Seaforth to 20 points, ahead of St Ives on 19.5 and Harbord on 19.

A huge congratulations to every player who pulled on the Seaforth shirt. The teamwork, the spirit, and the determination were outstanding from start to finish.

And a massive thank you to all the supporters who came along to cheer us on — your energy made a difference. Thanks too, to St Ives for hosting!

Enjoy Georgia and Rosmary's photos… it was a weekend worth celebrating.
