Injury recovery, is rest always best?
You know the time to rest is, immediately after an injury... and I recomend you stop participating in the activity that caused the injury as soon as it occurs. Working through the pain or ignoring an injury can worsen damage and prolong your recovery process.
Although rest is an important aspect of recovery, depending on the type of injury you have, gentle movement or activity modification can help bring fresh blood flow to the area, delivering oxygen and nutrients that aid in the healing process.
The key is to keep movement gentle, slow, and as pain-free as possible. Additionally, opting for an exercise that does not put pressure on the injured area, can help keep the rest of your body fit and strong.
Shifting back to an activity after you’ve sustained an injury is something you should do slowly, and, ideally, under the supervision of a trainer or other trained professional, to help prevent reinjury.
However, so many people just stop training altogether, and i see it alot with with regular gym clients, whether its with a minor strain or sprain or even a torn muscle.
Two points...
1 # Gentle movement of the area can help ease stiffness, improve range of motion, and aid in the recovery proces.
2 # So if you have injured your shoulder, (for example) there is no reason for you to rest your legs and core... and there are other ways to train your upper body that will have minimal impact on a shoulder, depending on the shoulder injury of cause.
