MIRAGE SEA KAYAKS STRENGTHENS AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING PARTNERSHIP
A new chapter for one of Australia’s most iconic sea kayak brands
Mirage Sea Kayaks is excited to announce a major strengthening of its long-standing manufacturing partnership with Fibretec Pty Ltd, bringing the complete manufacture, outfitting and finishing of Mirage Sea Kayaks together under one highly skilled team in Port Stephens, NSW.
For the past 16 years, Fibretec has been the exclusive manufacturer of all Mirage Sea Kayak composite shells, producing the high-quality fibreglass and Kevlar laminates that form the foundation of every Mirage kayak.
Until now, those shells have then been transferred to Mirage’s Newcastle facility for complete outfitting, customisation and final preparation.
Mirage has now made the decision to consolidate its manufacturing operations, moving its complete outfitting and customisation resources into Fibretec’s factory at Taylors Beach, Port Stephens.
The move brings the entire Mirage manufacturing process together in one location — from the initial laminate through to final fit-out, customisation and factory finishing.
For Mirage, it is an important step in strengthening quality control, specialist craftsmanship and the future of Australian sea kayak manufacturing.
“This is a really exciting step forward for Mirage,” said Shannon O’Brien, Managing Director of Mirage Sea Kayaks.
“Paul and the Fibretec team have been an integral part of Mirage manufacturing for the past 16 years. Their laminators are exceptionally skilled craftspeople and they understand our kayaks, our construction methods and the standards we expect incredibly well.
“Bringing the complete manufacturing and outfitting process together under one roof will give us even greater control over workmanship, consistency and quality from the first stage of construction right through to the finished kayak.
“Most importantly, this move helps secure the future of Mirage as a genuinely Australian-made sea kayak. We are incredibly proud of that.”
Fibretec Director Paul Tynan said the expanded partnership was a natural progression after many years working closely with Mirage.
“We have worked closely with Mirage for many years and we’re very pleased to be taking the next step in that partnership,” Paul said.
“Our team already knows these kayaks extremely well, having manufactured the shells for the past 16 years.
“We’re now looking forward to taking responsibility for the complete build and finishing process and delivering every Mirage kayak to the standard paddlers expect from the brand.
“There is a lot of specialist knowledge and craftsmanship involved in building a high-quality composite sea kayak, and we’re proud to be continuing that manufacturing here in Australia.”
MIRAGE REPAIRS & REFURBISHMENTS
The expanded partnership will also see Fibretec become the home of Mirage repairs, refurbishments and restorations.
Mirage owners will now have access to a genuine factory service for structural composite repairs, gelcoat work, replacement fittings, upgrades and complete refurbishments.
“There are Mirage kayaks that have been exploring Australian waterways for decades,” Shannon said.
“They are incredibly durable craft and their owners become very attached to them. We want to keep those kayaks in great condition, on the water and ready for many more adventures.”
Sydney Harbour Kayaks will continue as Mirage’s Sydney sales partner and will also provide a convenient transport service for repair and refurbishment work between Sydney and the Port Stephens factory.
