“ Building strong connections with our horses, both in the saddle an I started out, like most, competing at Pony club.

Trainer - Michelle Nickson

As a trainer I offer a holistic approach to training both horses and their riders, with the realisation that we, animals and humans, all learn in different ways. This is why I work hard in being able to tailor training to specific needs, so that progress is achieved with confidence and a stronger horse rider relationship. I also appreciate that as a trainer it is important that I invest in growing my knowledge base by engaging with other professional trainers on a regular basis. The more you open up your thinking and expand your knowledge the better equipped you are to tackle situations when they arise. I came into horse ownership in my early adult life, after longing for a pony all my childhood. Once I purchased my first horse I went straight into having regular lessons, to try to catch up with all those who have had the opportunity of riding since they were children. After I started to become slightly more accomplished, I also came to the realisation that more I learnt, the more I saw there was to learn. I also noticed that different training techniques had differing effects on the well-being of the horse and rider. I was mostly interested in dressage, eventing but predominantly showjumping. Then with the purchase of a horse that tripped over poles on the ground, I developed a strong focus and love for dressage, where I competed up to Advanced level in official competition. During the early period I’m in learning dressage, I started training under Level 3 instructor, and one of Australia’s top coaches, Ron Paterson. He influenced my riding/training philosophy immensely. With a strong basis on correct and classical, I have used these principles to start young horses on their ridden journey as well as progress the more established horses . When the experiences came of then owning my first two young horses, I began to recognise the importance of a solid basis for groundwork, that grows the connection between horse and rider. This is an integral step in the training regime, that can be often overlooked, but serves to only benefit the horse and rider, and can transfer over to when the horse is started under saddle. With the support of my coach, as well as friends and family, I then went on to complete firstly the introductory and then the level one assessments to receive my coaching accreditation through the governing body Equestrian Australia. I have now been coaching for over 5 years with clients that range from 4-50+ years of age, and with a range of horses that can be learning the very basics of handling to being competition ready. It gives me great satisfaction to see the transformation in horses and riders and the confidence and knowledge that they have attained. I also appreciate the experiences they have given me, to help me become a better coach, rider, handler and also hopefully person.
