Last weekend, members of Port Stephens Pickleball Club headed to the PCYC Bateau Bay Pickleball Tournament β€” and came home with a handful of medals and a lot of smiles.
Tournament play is a different experience to social pickleball. You dig a little deeper, compete against players from other clubs, make new connections, and discover things about your game that practice alone doesn't reveal. Medal or not, you always come home a better player.
If you've been wondering whether tournament play is for you β€” it probably is. PSPC has experienced tournament players who are happy to guide first-timers through the process, and plenty of coached sessions to help you prepare.

πŸ’‘ Coach's Corner β€” Tip #4
Return of Serve β€” Depth, Placement and the Run to the Kitchen
By: Coach Christine
Our wonderful coach Christine has sent in this tip about return of serve β€” and it is a much needed one for so many players. Return deep and move up to the kitchen go hand in hand, yet it is one of the most common gaps I see on court. I can't count how many times I have seen even seasoned players hit a quality return and stay behind the baseline β€” only to get pinned there while their partner has to move back too, as the serving team keeps driving toward them. I always suggest players treat "return and run" as one combined drill to build that muscle memory. Without further ado, here is the tip from Coach Christine:

RETURN OF SERVE

As coaches, we often see players hit a fast Return of Serve (RoS) in the hope it will be a winner. But then the ball comes back quickly β€” usually to their feet mid court.

Depth is more important than pace when it comes to your RoS, because in the game of pickleball, you need time to get to the kitchen.

Before hitting your RoS, try waiting for the ball to reach the "apex" and return the ball deep with a slight loft.
The apex is the highest point the ball reaches after bouncing. The ball's momentum slows, giving you maximum control and more time to set up your shot.

Achieving a deep RoS will keep your opponent back on the baseline, and give you more time to get to the kitchen.
Placement of the ball when returning is the next step to consider. Here are 3 strategies that may help β€” check out the video in the first comment below πŸ‘‡

What an incredible morning at Port Stephens Pickleball Club Inc! πŸ’›

We were so proud to welcome Kate Washington MP to our courts at Tomaree Netball Courts today for our special Skills & Drills session. Having our Member of Parliament see firsthand the energy, passion, and community spirit of this club means so much to every one of our 200+ members.

And we have to say β€” Kate picked up the game remarkably well! A natural on the courts, and we have a feeling this won't be her last game of pickleball. πŸ˜„

A huge thank you also to everyone who made this morning extra special:

πŸ› Kate Vorias from Picklelodian β€” for bringing an amazing range of clothing and paddles and getting right out on the courts with us. Always wonderful to have you! πŸ’›

Tony Morgan from mypickleball.com.au β€” for generously sending along the demo paddle pack so our players could try some great gear on the day.

πŸ₯ Scott and the team from Nelson Bay Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre β€” for coming along, getting out on the courts, and absolutely loving every minute of it. You're welcome back anytime! πŸ˜„πŸ’›

The only thing nobody quite mastered today? The scoring. πŸ˜‚ But don't worry β€” you are definitely not alone in that. Welcome to pickleball!

From 5 players in a side room at Nelson Bay PCYC in 2019 to one of the top clubs in Australia β€” this is what community sport looks like when a community comes together. πŸ’›

A huge thank you to Kate for giving her time to our club and our people. The door is always open.

πŸͺTomorrow's session just got even more exciting β€” a quick update!
We are thrilled to share that we will have two fantastic additions on the courts tomorrow:
πŸ› Kate Vorias from Picklelodian β€” Newcastle pickleball player, Level 2 coach, and familiar face on the tournament circuit β€” is joining us with a fantastic range of clothing and paddles. If you've crossed the net with Kate at a tournament, you'll know what a treat this is!
πŸ₯’ And while Tony Morgan from mypickleball.com.au can't be with us in person, he has very generously sent along a demo pack of paddles for players to try on the day. A brilliant chance to test some great gear right here on the courts!
On top of all that β€” Kate Washington MP joins us from 9:00 AM at Tomaree Netball Courts for our special Skills & Drills session. It's shaping up to be one of the best mornings we've ever had on the courts! πŸŽ‰
We also want to send a warm thank you to FD Pickleball β€” Trudie and Will won't be able to join us tomorrow, but we look forward to welcoming them back at a future session. πŸ’›
It's FREE β€” all are welcome. See you tomorrow! πŸ†

Now it's Grand Final time. πŸ†
Thursday 11 June β€” two reasons to come down:
πŸŒ… 9:00am β€” Local MP Kate Washington visits the club. Come and show her what Port Stephens Pickleball is all about.
πŸ† 6:30pm β€” Grand Final, Tomaree Sports Complex Netball Courts. Come and cheer on our finalists.
Two great reasons to make it a full PSPC Thursday. See you there.

πŸ₯’πŸͺCoaches Corner β€” Tip #3
Thinking about trying pickleball for the first time? Coach Linda has written this one just for you β€” and honestly, even seasoned players will smile reading it. πŸ’›
Over to you, Linda...

Thinking about trying Pickleball? Here's what you'll want to know before you come...
If pickleball has been popping up on your radar lately and you've been quietly wondering "could I do that?" ...the answer is almost certainly "yes!" And I want to make your first step as easy as possible.
I'm Linda, and I play (and coach) at our incredible Port Stephens Pickleball Club a few times a week. I wasn't always confident on the court β€” but this community made it easy to fall in love with the game, and I'd love that for you too.
Here's what I wish I had known before I showed up for the first time:
1. You don't need to be fit, fast, or sporty.
Pickleball is genuinely one of the most accessible sports around. The court is smaller than tennis, the ball moves slower, and the learning curve is surprisingly gentle. If you can walk and swing your arm, you can play.
2. You don't need your own gear to start.
Just show up in comfortable clothes and sneakers and we'll sort you out with a club paddle when you arrive. Nets and balls are all supplied.
3. Everyone remembers being a beginner.
Our community is warm, patient, and genuinely loves introducing new people to the game. You will not be judged. You'll be cheered!
4. And the scoring? Don't even worry about it yet.
Honestly, half of us are still working it out mid-game. πŸ˜‚ You'll pick it up as you go β€” and until then, someone will always call it out for you.
5. What to expect on your first day:
If you start with our Skills & Drills sessions on Fridays β€” a friendly welcome, a quick rundown of the basics, some gentle play, and a lot of laughing. And if you stay for coffee afterwards, that's where the real community magic happens. πŸ˜„
Can't make Fridays? Come along to any of our Social Pickleball sessions and we'll have you up and playing in no time.
πŸ‘‰ All sessions are listed on the Open Sports app. Sign up as a Beginner, and the right sessions will appear β€” then just book and show up!
The only thing we ask is that you come with curiosity and a dash of humour. Pickleball is good for your body, great for your mind, and genuinely a lot of fun.
We'd love to see you out here. Come and say hi if you see me around β€” let's get ridiculously enthusiastic about a small plastic ball together. πŸ˜‚
β€” Coach Linda
