Before rowing was an elite sport, it was a brutal 12-hour workday.

Long before anyone put on a unisuit, the original rowers were blue-collar "Watermen" hauling heavy cargo and ferrying passengers across industrial rivers. Pulling heavy wooden barges all week meant they had the kind of raw strength that modern weight rooms can't replicate. When the weekend hit, they jumped into razor-thin shells to race for cold, hard cash. That's rowing life.

Long before the NFL or NBA existed, professional sculling was the biggest spectator sport on earth.

In the 1800s, there were no stadium seats, just 100,000 screaming fans packing the riverbanks to watch two scullers go head-to-head for massive cash purses. This was a ruthless era of "cash-dash" racing, massive underground gambling, and raw industrial-age grit. Before rowing became an amateur tradition, it was a high-stakes trade where rowers were treated like absolute icons. That's rowing life.

Sunday Social Rowing

Last Sunday we had a very pleasant evening with 6 crews on the water. A few people came down for their first row and successfully navigated their first time in the boat.
Our next Sunday social rowing will be on Sunday 29 march. Newcomers welcome. Please contact the club if interested

Our social rowing evening on Sunday was a lot of fun. Our next session will be on Sunday 15 march at 5pm at the rowing sheds at Lake Moodemere. The evening is very suitable for anyone who hasn’t rowed before and wants to have a go.
The evening is free but bookings are essential via DM

Social Rowing today (Sunday 1 March)
With patches of rain sweeping across the north east, we will still conduct the first of our social rows this afternoon from 5 pm.

If the rain sets in, we will pivot towards indoor rowing and learning the rowing technique

Social Rowing

Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club is hosting a series of Learn to Row and social rowing Sundays through March.
The days are:
Sunday 1 st March
Sunday 15 March
Sunday 22 March
Sunday 29 March

Come for a row at 5pm on each of the days and enjoy a simple barbecue at the finish of each session.
If you would like ro learn how to row, then this is the perfect opportunity .
We also have paddle boards for use.
Bookings are essential for catering.

Regatta call for help

Dear Members, Families and Friends of the Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club.

We are reaching out to ask if you could help us at the REGATTA this year on
January 10th and 11th at Lake Moodemere.
Rutherglen Lake have the food stall to run for this event.
This is a great opportunity to raise some funds for new equipment.
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP
Many hands make light work and we would like to be able to create a roster of helpers. We suggest shifts of 3 hours and there is great flexibility to suit. Ie: from making salad rolls and sandwiches early each morning to cooking on the BBQ and serving over the days.

Please ask other family and friends if they are available to help out.
