Most people come to us because they want to learn self-defence, get fitter, feel safer, move better, or rebuild a bit of confidence.

Fair enough. Good reasons.

But one of the things I love hearing in our reviews is that people often find more than they expected.

They come in thinking it’s about punches, pads, fitness, techniques, or learning what to do if something goes pear-shaped.

Then somewhere along the way they realise it’s also about how they stand, how they breathe, how they think, how they handle pressure, and how they carry themselves outside the gym.

That’s the sneaky bit.

Self-defence and fitness are just 2 of the doorways.

The real work is helping people become stronger, calmer, more capable humans.

No ego. No tough-guy nonsense. No pretending to be ninjas in the shadows. Just real training, with good people, in a place where you can learn, laugh, struggle, improve, and leave with a little more in the cup than when you walked in.

As one of our members said, Jim’s philosophy of:

has had a huge impact on how they live.

Friday night we hosted our bimonthly volleyball tournament.

Sometimes we start our evening classes with volleyball since it warms you up and is plenty of fun.

And every two months we have a tournament of the two teams to see who will come out on top!

But if your body is leaking power, your mind is scattered, or your emotions are driving the bus… more effort usually just means more strain.

That’s why we teach:

Structure before strength.

Stack it.
Don’t strain it.
Think clearer.
Move better.
Build a better you.

This isn’t just about training harder. It’s about learning how to use yourself better: physically, mentally and emotionally.

In tonight’s class we worked on a drill that utilised both offensive and defence moves. Working on combos that use both defensive and offensive moves is great fun, movement and exercise. Jabbing and crossing while adding slips and Bob and weaves are a great way to use them both in the same drill.

One of the best parts of what we do at Raw isn’t just seeing people get fitter, stronger or more skilled.

It’s watching them grow.

When a young person starts training with us at 12 and is still walking through the doors at 18, twice a week, still enjoying it, still learning, still developing — that means a lot.

Because good training shouldn’t just build technique.

It should build confidence.
It should build resilience.
It should build better decision-making.
It should help people feel more capable in themselves.

And for parents, we know that trust matters.

You’re not just sending your child somewhere to kick pads and burn energy. You’re trusting us to help guide, support and challenge them in a way that actually helps them grow.

Day 24.

I’m having fun while also helping raise money for Camp Quality, who help kids facing cancer.

Spending time with those you love is immeasurable, and hitting them with pool noodles just adds to it : )

When things get intense, most people hold their breath, brace, rush, or react.

But when you learn to exhale first, you create space.

Space to regulate.
Space to reset.
Space to choose.
